How does the vaccination help?
Like most vaccinations, they’re recommended when travelling to high-risk areas. Some diseases have no cure and can be painful and dangerous, such as Japanese Encephalitis (The disease that causes brain infections).
Vaccinations are highly recommended if you’re staying or visiting local areas where the food hygiene and sanitation are poor, especially for an extended period. According to the NHS, it’s common for people who have contracted the typhoid fever infection when visiting countries such as India, Bangladesh and Pakistan.
It’s important to note that the typhoid vaccination does not provide 100% protection against typhoid fever. Some vaccines protect you between 50-80%; thus, additional measures are required.
Symptoms of Typhoid Fever

Ignoring these symptoms can lead to health degeneration and significant complications.

Preventions
Typhoid is a contagious infection. It can be transmitted from one person to another through contaminated waters and food. An infected person passes on the bacteria in their faeces or urine.
In poorer areas or with areas that have insufficient hygiene standards, it’s likely that people can eat food or drink water that’s been contaminated with small amounts of faeces or urine. The infection can spread like this, and people can develop typhoid fever.
To maintain better standards, you must continue to do the following as the vaccination is not 100% effective:
- Consume your antibiotics instructed by the GP or pharmacy
- Regularly wash your hands
- If you are contagious, you must avoid preparing food for others until your GP or Doctor
