What is Ear Wax?

Ear wax is a natural substance produced to protect the ear from infection and dust. Made of dead skin cells, oil, and sweat, it prevents dirt and germs from entering the ear canal. Using earwax softening drops like olive oil or sodium bicarbonate can help prevent excessive build-up.

How Often Should You Remove Earwax?

Most people don’t need routine removal, but if you experience symptoms of build-up, professional removal may be beneficial.

Who is This Service For?

Suitable for adults and children aged 18+. We do not perform removal for foreign object extraction. You may need to see your GP if you have:

  • A perforated eardrum or ear infection
  • Recent ear surgery (last 90 days)
  • Current pain linked to wax build-up
  • Ear conditions like granulation or ear moulds in the last 90 days

What to Expect at Your Appointment

Your 30-minute appointment includes:

  • A consultation with a trained nurse
  • An ear examination using an otoscope
  • A step-by-step explanation of the procedure
  • Gentle removal using microsuction or irrigation
Mild discomfort is possible but usually brief. If wax removal is unsuccessful, we’ll advise on next steps. You can return to normal activities immediately.

How to Prepare for Your Appointment

For a comfortable, effective procedure, soften the wax using ear drops (2–4 times daily) for at least five days before your visit. If you wear a hearing aid, overnight use of drops may be necessary to prevent interference with function. Avoid inserting fingers or cotton buds, as this can worsen the blockage.
