Aldara is a cream that you can only get with a prescription, and it contains 5% imiquimod as the active ingredient. It's typically used to treat and remove visible signs of external genital warts. It can also be used to remove precancerous skin growths.
Aldara works well for treating genital warts, but it's crucial to use it properly by following the instructions. Be careful not to apply it to the skin surrounding the warts or on healthy skin, as it may cause irritation.
Aldara contains the active ingredient Imiquimod, which has been used since 1997 to effectively treat genital warts. Research indicates that Imiquimod boosts your immune system, helping it to identify and target the diseased cells associated with genital warts. As these affected cells are destroyed, new, healthy cells grow to clear the skin.
Aldara is simple to use since it's not a medicine you need to take orally. As a topical cream, you just need to apply it to the external areas of the body where you can see warts or precancerous growths.
It's a one-time treatment that works like a week-long course. You need to apply the cream three times a week, typically every other day, such as on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Each sachet of cream has enough to cover the wart-affected area, up to twenty square centimetres.
Aldara's effectiveness can differ based on how severe your genital warts are. If your warts don't go away after the first week of treatment, you may need to repeat the one-week course several times. Many women find that their genital warts clear up more quickly, often within eight weeks.
However, men might need to wait up to 12 weeks for the warts to clear. For some people, warts can disappear in as little as four weeks. It's important not to use Aldara for more than 16 weeks in a row.
If you don't see any visible results from the treatment after a few weeks, it's a good idea to get in touch with our clinician. Aldara can be quite strong for some individuals. If you think this applies to you, please log in to your account and send a message to our clinician.
People often make a few common mistakes with Aldara cream, such as applying too much, missing a dose, swallowing the cream, or putting it on the wrong area of the body. If any of these happen, the instructions below will guide you.
Aldara is effective for treating genital warts and is more convenient than other treatments. You just need to apply Aldara cream once daily, before bedtime.
This means you don't need to follow a schedule that requires applying it several times a day. Additionally, it works in a unique way. Instead of targeting genital warts directly, it helps stimulate your immune system to identify and deal with the diseased cells associated with the warts.
Yes, there are other creams that you apply directly to the skin. Using medication this way can be more convenient if you find it difficult or unpleasant to swallow tablets or capsules.
A clinical trial, which was both randomised and double-blind, showed that between 37% and 50% of participants experienced complete removal of their warts.
This was following treatment with Imiquimod 5% cream, applied three times a week for up to sixteen weeks.
After the same period, 76% of people using imiquimod 5% cream saw partial clearance of their warts. It's important to remember that imiquimod doesn't actually cure the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is responsible for genital warts.
Actually, new warts might show up while you're undergoing treatment because the cream mainly works by boosting your immune system to target and destroy the cells of the genital warts.
Yes, you'll need a prescription to begin using Aldara. This allows our clinician to determine if it's safe and appropriate for you, considering your health history.
During your treatment, our clinician might need to change your treatment plan if you're not getting the expected results.
Aldara cream isn't right for everyone, and there are a few things you should know when using it.
Here's all the official information about it. If anything isn't clear, please let our clinician know, and they can discuss it with you.
