Aldara Cream Description
Aldara cream is a treatment applied to the skin to help clear genital warts.
It's available as a single dose that you apply over the course of a week.
Aldara has 5% imiquimod, which is a type of immune response modifier.

What is Aldara?

Aldara is a cream that you can only get with a prescription, and it contains 5% imiquimod as the active ingredient. It's typically used to treat and remove visible signs of external genital warts. It can also be used to remove precancerous skin growths.

Aldara works well for treating genital warts, but it's crucial to use it properly by following the instructions. Be careful not to apply it to the skin surrounding the warts or on healthy skin, as it may cause irritation.

How does Aldara work?

Aldara contains the active ingredient Imiquimod, which has been used since 1997 to effectively treat genital warts. Research indicates that Imiquimod boosts your immune system, helping it to identify and target the diseased cells associated with genital warts. As these affected cells are destroyed, new, healthy cells grow to clear the skin.

Aldara is simple to use since it's not a medicine you need to take orally. As a topical cream, you just need to apply it to the external areas of the body where you can see warts or precancerous growths.

What doses of Aldara are there?

It's a one-time treatment that works like a week-long course. You need to apply the cream three times a week, typically every other day, such as on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Each sachet of cream has enough to cover the wart-affected area, up to twenty square centimetres.

How long does it take Aldara to work?

Aldara's effectiveness can differ based on how severe your genital warts are. If your warts don't go away after the first week of treatment, you may need to repeat the one-week course several times. Many women find that their genital warts clear up more quickly, often within eight weeks.

However, men might need to wait up to 12 weeks for the warts to clear. For some people, warts can disappear in as little as four weeks. It's important not to use Aldara for more than 16 weeks in a row.

If you don't see any visible results from the treatment after a few weeks, it's a good idea to get in touch with our clinician. Aldara can be quite strong for some individuals. If you think this applies to you, please log in to your account and send a message to our clinician.

What should I do if I make a mistake when using Aldara?

People often make a few common mistakes with Aldara cream, such as applying too much, missing a dose, swallowing the cream, or putting it on the wrong area of the body. If any of these happen, the instructions below will guide you.

1
If you've used too much cream, gently wash the area with mild soap and water. If you feel any discomfort from applying too much, wait until the symptoms ease after washing, then continue using Aldara as your clinician has recommended.
2
If you forget to use a dose, just apply it as soon as you remember and then carry on with the schedule your clinician recommended. If you miss a dose, don't double up or use it twice in one day. Make sure to apply Aldara just once a day.
3
If you accidentally swallow Aldara cream, it's important to get emergency medical help straight away.
4
If you accidentally apply Aldara cream to the wrong area, such as inside the vagina or anus, rinse it off immediately with lots of water. If you feel any irritation or discomfort, please get in touch with our clinician.

How is Aldara different from other treatments for genital warts?

Aldara is effective for treating genital warts and is more convenient than other treatments. You just need to apply Aldara cream once daily, before bedtime.

This means you don't need to follow a schedule that requires applying it several times a day. Additionally, it works in a unique way. Instead of targeting genital warts directly, it helps stimulate your immune system to identify and deal with the diseased cells associated with the warts.

Is Aldara similar to any other treatments?

Yes, there are other creams that you apply directly to the skin. Using medication this way can be more convenient if you find it difficult or unpleasant to swallow tablets or capsules.

How effective is Aldara?

A clinical trial, which was both randomised and double-blind, showed that between 37% and 50% of participants experienced complete removal of their warts.

This was following treatment with Imiquimod 5% cream, applied three times a week for up to sixteen weeks.

After the same period, 76% of people using imiquimod 5% cream saw partial clearance of their warts. It's important to remember that imiquimod doesn't actually cure the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is responsible for genital warts.

Actually, new warts might show up while you're undergoing treatment because the cream mainly works by boosting your immune system to target and destroy the cells of the genital warts.

Do I need a prescription for Aldara?

Yes, you'll need a prescription to begin using Aldara. This allows our clinician to determine if it's safe and appropriate for you, considering your health history.

During your treatment, our clinician might need to change your treatment plan if you're not getting the expected results.
