Almotriptan Description
Almotriptan is a generic tablet used to relieve migraine symptoms when they occur.
It works by narrowing the widened blood vessels in your brain, which are believed to contribute to migraines.
May help ease migraine symptoms within 30 to 60 minutes.

What is Almotriptan?

Almotriptan is a generic tablet used to relieve migraine symptoms. Migraines are intense headaches that cause a throbbing pain and often make you sensitive to bright lights and loud noises.

Almotriptan is used to relieve your symptoms, not to prevent them. You should take it only when you start noticing symptoms, rather than on a regular schedule.

It only works for migraine headaches. If you're dealing with a different type of headache, like a stress or tension headache, you'll need to use a different pain relief medication.

How does Almotriptan work?

The exact cause of migraines isn't completely known, but it's believed that changes in certain nerves and blood vessels in the brain lead to many of the symptoms. These changes can sometimes be triggered by things like specific foods or drinks.

Almotriptan is a medicine classified as a selective serotonin receptor agonist, often referred to as a ‘triptan’. It works by attaching to serotonin receptors in the blood vessels of your brain, causing them to narrow. This action helps relieve the pain and nausea linked to migraine headaches.

What doses of Almotriptan are there?

Almotriptan comes in just one dose: 12.5mg, and you should only take one tablet at a time. If you frequently find that a single tablet isn't enough to relieve your symptoms, please get in touch with our clinician. You may need to consider a different treatment option.

How long does it take Almotriptan to work?

Almotriptan is a quick-acting tablet, so it should begin to ease your symptoms quite swiftly—many people feel much better within just 30 minutes. If you don't feel any relief, wait at least two hours before taking another dose, and make sure not to take more than two tablets in a 24-hour period. Since its half-life is about three hours (meaning it takes roughly three hours for half of the medication to become inactive in your body), it isn't suitable for preventing migraines.

What should I do if I make a mistake when taking Almotriptan?

If you accidentally take too much Almotriptan, get medical assistance immediately. Almotriptan isn't a medication you need to take on a strict schedule, so there's no need to worry if you forget a dose. Just ensure you don't take more than one tablet within two hours, or more than two tablets in a day. If you have severe kidney disease, you should not take more than one tablet a day.
