Bricanyl Turbohaler Description
Bricanyl is a reliever inhaler used to manage sudden asthma symptoms.
It helps to relax the muscles in your airways, which makes breathing easier.
It's available in a Turbohaler, which provides the medication in the form of a dry powder.

What is Bricanyl?

Bricanyl, also known as Terbutaline, is a reliever inhaler used to manage asthma symptoms and other lung conditions. It can also be helpful for those with COPD, bronchitis, and emphysema.

It's a bronchodilator, which means it's an inhaler that helps open up your airways when you're having trouble breathing.

How does Bricanyl treat asthma?

Bricanyl helps relieve wheezing, coughing, and breathing problems by relaxing the muscles in your airways. This action widens the airways, making it easier for air to flow into your lungs. Bricanyl is highly effective for treating asthma and similar conditions. It begins working within minutes and its effects can last up to six hours.

You should use reliever inhalers like Bricanyl only when you have asthma symptoms or during an asthma attack.

What dose of Bricanyl should I take?

Typically, you would take one 0.5mg dose when you feel breathless, which means one puff of the inhaler, up to four times a day. However, the dose might change based on your health needs. We can discuss the best dose for you during your consultation with us. If you notice the dose isn't working as it should, please message our clinician. We can then adjust your dose or look into other treatment options with you.

Can I get Bricanyl Turbohaler over the counter?

No, you can't buy Bricanyl over the counter. It's only available with a prescription. You'll need to have a chat with a clinician first, so they can determine if it's appropriate and safe for you to use.

Bricanyl may cause side effects such as headaches, feeling shaky, and muscle cramps. A clinician will consider these factors before prescribing Bricanyl to you.

Can I get Bricanyl as a tablet or liquid?

You can, but not from our pharmacy. These aren't standard treatments for asthma and can be risky for pregnant women. There's also a chance they might be misused in sports. Bricanyl tablets and liquids don't get absorbed by the body as effectively as Bricanyl inhalers.

Does Bricanyl work better than Ventolin?

It's really about which one suits you better rather than which is superior. They have different active ingredients (Ventolin contains salbutamol, not terbutaline), but there shouldn't be a significant difference in how effectively they work.

For adults, the choice of inhaler depends on the type you're using and your ability to breathe deeply and quickly into it. If you can manage deep, quick breaths, Bricanyl might be a good fit. However, if that's a bit challenging, Ventolin could be more effective. We're here to help you explore all your options and find the best treatment for your health needs.

Will I need to use another inhaler alongside Bricanyl?

Yes, usually. A reliever inhaler is used to address asthma symptoms as they occur. On the other hand, a preventer inhaler works differently. It's a treatment you should use daily to keep asthma under control, even if you feel your asthma is well-managed. A preventer inhaler helps build up protection against symptoms over time. It contains a low-dose steroid that reduces swelling and inflammation in your airways.

During your consultation with us, we can discuss both reliever and preventer inhalers and help you determine if you need prescriptions for both types.
