Capasal Description
Capasal has three active ingredients that each address different symptoms.
Salicylic acid helps get rid of scales, coconut oil keeps the skin moisturised, and coal tar eases itching.
Start by using it every day, then cut back to 2-3 times a week.

What is Capasal?

Capasal therapeutic shampoo is used to treat dry, scaly scalps, which can be caused by conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, and dandruff. It has three active ingredients that work together to address various problems.

Psoriasis is a long-term inflammatory condition that shows up as red, raised patches with silvery scales on your skin. It's usually caused by your immune system prompting the growth of keratinocytes, which are cells that produce keratin, resulting in these patches. Additionally, your skin doesn't release enough lipids, which are fatty compounds, contributing to dry and flaky skin.

Similar to psoriasis, seborrhoeic dermatitis is a long-term inflammatory skin condition, but it has different causes. It's triggered by Malassezia, a type of yeast, which leads to an immune response and an increase in skin oils. This can cause papules and plaques to develop, especially in oily areas like the scalp. While there's no cure for seborrhoeic dermatitis, treatments can help ease the symptoms.

How does Capasal work?

Capasal contains three active ingredients: salicylic acid, coconut oil, and distilled coal tar.

Salicylic acid is a topical keratolytic, which means it breaks down keratin. This process helps to get rid of scaly, tough skin and boosts skin hydration by reducing its pH level.
Coconut oil acts as an emollient. It softens your skin and moisturises and lubricates your scalp. This can make your hair feel softer and less dry.
Distilled coal tar helps return the scalp to its normal state and eases itching. It works by slowing down cell growth, which is useful for treating thick and scaly skin.

When these ingredients are combined, they help to relieve the symptoms linked to psoriasis and seborrhoeic dermatitis.

How long do I use Capasal for?

You can use Capasal daily until your condition gets better. Once it has improved, use it now and then to stop the symptoms from coming back. You should notice some improvement on your scalp within four weeks. If you don't, have a chat with a clinician.

How is Capasal different to other treatments?

Common treatments for dermatitis and psoriasis often involve either an antifungal or a steroid. If seborrhoeic dermatitis is due to Malsezzia (a type of yeast), antifungals such as itraconazole are used to halt the growth and spread of the yeast. Steroids are recommended if the condition is more severe and inflamed. Hydrocortisone, a steroid, can help reduce inflammation and swelling. Some medications, like Daktacort, combine both antifungal and steroid effects.

You might also be given a treatment such as Elidel, which is a calcineurin inhibitor. It works by blocking inflammatory cytokines, helping to reduce swelling and inflammation.

Capasal works differently from the medications mentioned earlier. It helps to soften scales and boost hydration. It's typically suggested for mild dermatitis and psoriasis on the scalp, or it can be used with other treatments to ease symptoms such as itching and dryness.

How well does Capasal work for psoriasis and seborrhoeic dermatitis?

A study looked at how Capasal and Calcipotriol scalp solution work in treating scalp psoriasis. Calcipotriol, a form of vitamin D, helps slow down the growth of skin cells. This reduces the number of plaques on the scalp, helping to treat psoriasis.

After eight weeks, the results indicated that 57% of patients using calcipotriol saw an improvement in their psoriasis, while only 37% of those using Capasal experienced the same. However, although calcipotriol was more effective in treating psoriasis, a higher number of patients experienced adverse skin reactions compared to those using Capasal, with 59% affected versus 35%.

If your symptoms are only mild, Capasal could be the better choice for you.

How does Capasal affect hair?

For the best results, it's advised to steer clear of hair products like gel, dye, or conditioner while undergoing treatment. You don't have to shampoo your hair between washes or after using Capasal, but if you choose to, opt for a milder shampoo. Capasal has very few side effects and won't lead to hair loss. In fact, it helps to moisturise and hydrate your hair, making it feel softer.
