Cardioplen Xl Description
Cardioplen XL is a tablet that helps control high blood pressure and angina.
It contains felodipine, a calcium-channel blocker that helps to widen your arteries.
5mg a day is the usual dose, but it can be increased to as much as 20mg.

What is Cardioplen XL?

Cardioplen XL is a medication used to control high blood pressure. It can also help decrease the number of angina attacks. Blood pressure readings above 140/90mmHg are considered high and can lead to a greater risk of strokes, heart failure, and kidney failure.

Cardioplen XL has felodipine as its active ingredient, which helps lower high blood pressure. Medicines with felodipine belong to a group known as calcium-channel blockers.

Calcium-channel blockers help to lower blood pressure by widening the arteries, which reduces resistance. Lowering blood pressure can decrease the risk of heart-related deaths and illnesses. Felodipine is also effective in reducing the risk of strokes.

How does Cardioplen XL work?

The active ingredient in Cardioplen XL, felodipine, helps by stopping calcium from entering the arteries. When calcium gets into the smooth muscle, the middle layer of the arteries, it makes them narrow, which increases blood pressure. By blocking the calcium channels in the smooth muscle, Cardioplen XL relaxes and widens the arteries. This reduces resistance, lowers blood pressure, and eases the strain on your heart.

Felodipine helps to widen the arteries that supply blood to your heart, allowing more blood and oxygen to reach the heart muscle. Improved blood flow to the heart can reduce the risk of angina.

What doses of Cardioplen XL are there?

Cardioplen XL is available in three different strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, and 10mg. The dose you need may vary based on several factors, such as the specific condition being treated. Generally, these are the doses that are commonly prescribed.

For high blood pressure: Typically, you would start with a 5mg dose once a day, but it can be increased up to a maximum of 20mg if needed.

For angina: You start with a dose of 5mg once a day, but it can be increased to a maximum of 10mg once a day if needed.

For older adults: You can start with a reduced dose of 2.5mg once daily.

How long does Cardioplen XL take to work?

Cardioplen XL is known as a prolonged release tablet. This means that the active ingredient, felodipine, is gradually released and absorbed by your body over a few hours. While felodipine begins to work in your body quite quickly, it might take a couple of weeks for you to notice the full effect.

What happens if I miss a dose?

If you forget to take a dose of Cardioplen XL, don't worry. Just skip the missed dose and take your next one at the usual time. Avoid taking a double dose.

What dose of Cardioplen XL should I take?

Adults typically start with a 5mg dose, but this can be adjusted based on your blood pressure. If your blood pressure remains high, the dose might be increased up to a maximum of 20mg.

Can I take Cardioplen XL whilst pregnant?

You shouldn't take Cardioplen XL if you're pregnant. If you become pregnant, stop taking it straight away and get in touch with our clinician for further advice.
