Lustral Description
Escitalopram is an SSRI that works well for treating premature ejaculation.
Escitalopram, the active ingredient, works by boosting serotonin levels to help delay ejaculation.
Escitalopram doesn't cause numbness in the penis, so you'll experience the full sensation during sex.

What is Escitalopram?

Escitalopram is a tablet used to treat premature ejaculation. It's a type of medication called a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). It's similar to Cipramil, which is also sometimes used for premature ejaculation. Cipramil is like the original version, while Escitalopram is the newer one.

Escitalopram is commonly prescribed for depression and anxiety over the long term, but it can also help with premature ejaculation. Since this use of Escitalopram is off-label, it's important to discuss with a healthcare professional to see if it's the right option for you. If you're planning to have a baby, it might not be the best choice, as one study found that Escitalopram could lower sperm counts in men who used it.

How does Escitalopram work?

Escitalopram contains the active ingredient escitalopram, which is a type of SSRI. It functions by attaching to a protein known as 5-HTT. This helps your brain absorb more serotonin, which can otherwise get lost in the gaps between nerve cells. As a result, more serotonin is available to work throughout your system.

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that plays a role in managing mood and is often used to treat depression and anxiety. It also has the effect of delaying ejaculation, which can be beneficial for men who experience premature ejaculation. Although we're not entirely certain why Escitalopram has this effect, it's believed to be linked to less-sensitive serotonin receptors in men with this condition.

What doses of Escitalopram are there?

Escitalopram typically begins with a 5mg dose, but some individuals might require a higher dose of 10mg or even 20mg. Starting with a lower dose is often recommended, as higher doses can increase the chance of side effects. Your clinician can help determine the most suitable dose for you, considering your health and how you respond to the medication. Make sure you consult your clinician before increasing your dose.

How long does it take Escitalopram to work?

Escitalopram is absorbed into your system quickly, but it won't work fully straight away. It typically takes about four hours to reach its highest levels in your blood. The longer you take Escitalopram, the more effective it becomes at easing symptoms of premature ejaculation. If you've just begun taking Escitalopram and are still having issues with premature ejaculation, don't be concerned. Allow a few weeks, and you'll likely notice a significant improvement.

What should I do if I accidentally take Escitalopram incorrectly?

If you forget to take Escitalopram and you're still awake, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it's almost time for your next dose, just skip the missed one and continue with your usual schedule. Make sure you don't stop taking Escitalopram without consulting your clinician.

If you accidentally take too much Escitalopram, it's important to seek medical help straight away. High doses can lead to concerning symptoms, but you should get help even if you feel fine. Bring the Escitalopram packaging with you so the medical team can see what you've taken. If you're thinking about stopping Escitalopram, have a chat with your clinician first. It's generally not advised to stop suddenly, so your clinician can guide you on how to safely stop your treatment.

How is Escitalopram different from other treatments for premature ejaculation?

Some individuals choose to manage their premature ejaculation using topical treatments that lessen sensation, such as Fortacin spray. There are also creams available, like Emla cream, which contain the same active ingredients.

Escitalopram isn't a numbing spray or cream, so it helps you last longer in bed without dulling sensation. However, treatments like Fortacin can be quite handy as they usually take effect almost straight away, offering added convenience.

Is Escitalopram similar to any other treatments?

Dapoxetine, sometimes known by the brand name Priligy, is the only SSRI approved for treating premature ejaculation. It's similar to Escitalopram, but Dapoxetine works more quickly and exits your system faster. This means you can take it as needed for premature ejaculation, though it's not effective for treating depression. If Dapoxetine isn't suitable for you, Escitalopram could be a good alternative.

There are other SSRIs that are sometimes used off-label for premature ejaculation, such as Cipramil, Seroxat, Prozac, and Sertraline. Escitalopram is quite similar to Cipramil, as it's a newer version developed from it. Escitalopram is believed to cause a few less side effects than Cipramil. While all these medications function in a similar manner since they're all SSRIs, they each have different active ingredients. Therefore, if one doesn't work well for you, another might be more suitable.

Can I drink alcohol on Escitalopram?

If you're on Escitalopram, it's best to steer clear of alcohol. While having a small drink isn't known to be harmful, it's generally not recommended. Combining alcohol with Escitalopram can heighten the chances of side effects such as dizziness and drowsiness. Since both are processed by the liver, alcohol might also reduce Escitalopram's effectiveness in treating premature ejaculation.

How effective is Escitalopram?

Research on Escitalopram for premature ejaculation has demonstrated that it is both effective and safe. It can even lead to significant improvements after the treatment has ended. The primary way to assess the benefits of medications for premature ejaculation is by measuring the intravaginal ejaculation latency time (IELT). This essentially refers to how long it takes a man to reach orgasm during vaginal intercourse.

A study discovered that after two weeks of taking Escitalopram, the IELT increased by an average of 226%. After four weeks, the IELT among the men was 503% higher. Additionally, there were no significant side effects after four weeks of using Escitalopram.

Another study showed that after 12 weeks of taking Escitalopram, the IELT increased by 4.9 times, and the men were very satisfied with their sex lives. Even three months after stopping the treatment, improvements were still noted, indicating it continued to be beneficial.

Do I need a prescription for Escitalopram?

Yes, you'll need a clinician to prescribe Escitalopram for you. If you have certain medical conditions or are on other medications, it may not be safe for you to use. A clinician will need to ensure it's suitable for you, especially since it's used off-label for premature ejaculation. If you're wondering if Escitalopram could be right for you, our clinicians can advise you. Simply share your health details with us.
