Clobaderm Description
ClobaDerm is a steroid cream that helps lessen eczema symptoms.
It won't cure eczema, but it can help manage symptoms and stop flare-ups from happening.
It comes in two forms: cream and ointment.

What is ClobaDerm?

ClobaDerm is a topical steroid with properties that reduce inflammation and suppress the local immune response. It's used to relieve symptoms of inflammatory conditions, such as atopic eczema, which is the most common type of eczema. Atopic eczema typically causes dry, itchy, and inflamed skin. While the exact cause isn't fully understood, research suggests that in about half of eczema cases, a mutation in the filaggrin gene is to blame. This gene produces the FLG protein, which helps keep the skin hydrated and maintains its barrier.

Topical steroids, used with emollients, are usually the first choice for treating eczema. While they won't cure eczema, as it's a lifelong condition, they can help manage symptoms and reduce flare-ups.

How does ClobaDerm work?

People with eczema have a weakened skin barrier, making them more susceptible to infections and allergies. This causes the body to react with inflammation when exposed to irritants, producing cells such as lymphocytes and eosinophils. Clobetasol propionate, the active ingredient in ClobaDerm, helps reduce inflammation by blocking the production of these inflammatory cells and encouraging the creation of anti-inflammatory proteins.

What versions of ClobaDerm are there?

ClobaDerm comes in two types: a cream and an ointment. Both contain the same active ingredient in the same concentration, but the ointment is more potent. This is due to its thicker, oilier texture, which helps it absorb deeper into the skin, making it more effective.

How long does ClobaDerm take to work?

You should start to notice your symptoms getting better within a few days of using ClobaDerm. However, if there's no change after a couple of weeks, get in touch with your clinician online. They will determine whether you need a higher dose or a different treatment.

What should I do if I make a mistake when taking ClobaDerm?

If you accidentally use too much on your skin, give your doctor a call for advice. Overuse can lead to side effects and might make you unwell.

If you forget to use ClobaDerm, there's no need to worry. Simply apply it when you remember, unless it's nearly time for your next dose. If that's the case, just skip the missed dose and carry on with your usual schedule. Avoid using a double dose to make up for the one you missed.

Will ClobaDerm completely heal my eczema?

At the moment, there's no permanent cure for eczema. Treatments are aimed at lessening the severity of your eczema and its symptoms. Steroids are useful because they have anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce swelling and redness. They also have anti-itch properties, which can help stop the itch-scratch cycle.

What are the side effects of ClobaDerm?

Is ClobaDerm available without a prescription?

No, ClobaDerm can only be obtained with a prescription. This ensures your clinician can determine if it's a safe and effective option for you.

How does ClobaDerm compare with other steroids?

Steroids are medications that reduce inflammation and have properties that suppress the immune system and relieve itching. Their strength, or potency, varies based on the active ingredient, form, and concentration. Here are some examples of steroids, listed from the weakest to the strongest:

Hydrocortisone is the mildest, followed by Elocon, then Betnovate, with Dermovate being the strongest.

Your clinician will decide the strength you need depending on how severe your eczema is and where it’s located. Usually, they'll begin with a lower strength steroid, such as Elocon. ClobaDerm is similar to Dermovate and is considered a "Very Potent" steroid. Both have the same active ingredient in the same concentration. The differences lie in the brand, packaging, and cost.

Steroids come in various forms, such as creams, ointments, and scalp solutions. Your clinician will choose the most suitable one for you, based on where your eczema is and how sensitive your skin is. Strong steroids like Dermovate should not be applied to your face, groin, armpits, or genitals. They're also not appropriate for children.
