Colpermin Description
Colpermin is a natural treatment for symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
It includes peppermint oil, known for its antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory qualities.
The effects might take a few hours to become noticeable.

What is Colpermin?

Colpermin is used to ease IBS symptoms. It contains peppermint oil, a natural remedy that has been used for ages to soothe abdominal pain. It acts as an antispasmodic, which means it stops muscle spasms to help reduce pain.

IBS, or irritable bowel syndrome, is a common condition affecting the digestive system, leading to symptoms like tummy pain and changes in bowel habits. Although there's no cure for IBS, treatments are available to ease the symptoms. While these treatments can be useful during flare-ups, making changes to your diet and getting regular exercise can help you manage your IBS more effectively over time.

How does Colpermin work?

Peppermint oil has L-menthol, an antispasmodic that works by blocking calcium channels in smooth muscles. This action helps relax the muscles, easing abdominal pain, cramps, and discomfort.

Colpermin also has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. By reducing inflammation and eliminating microorganisms that could worsen IBS symptoms, it can help ease these symptoms. However, the primary way peppermint oil works is through its antispasmodic activity.

What doses of Colpermin are there?

Each Colpermin tablet contains 0.2ml of peppermint oil. The capsule has a special coating that stops it from dissolving until it gets to the small bowel. This means it can work directly in the bowels, including the colon and small intestine, making it more effective.

What should I do if I make a mistake when taking Colpermin?

If you miss a dose, just skip it and take your next dose at the usual time. Avoid taking two doses to make up for the one you missed.

If you accidentally take more than the recommended dose, get in touch with your doctor or visit your nearest A&E department.

How long does Colpermin take to work?

The outer layer stops the peppermint oil from being absorbed until it gets to the bowel, where it's slowly released into the bloodstream. It might take a few hours for you to notice any effects, but it could take up to 1-2 weeks to experience the full benefits.

How effective is Colpermin?

Peppermint oil is known to be quite effective in easing the discomfort often linked with IBS.

In a study involving 178 patients with IBS, participants were divided into two groups. One group, consisting of 91 patients, took two capsules of Mintoil (peppermint oil) twice daily for three months. The other group, with 87 patients, received a placebo. By the end of the study, those taking peppermint oil experienced significant improvements in their IBS symptoms. An impressive 97% of the peppermint oil group reported relief from symptoms like nausea, abdominal pain, and irregular bowel movements compared to the placebo group. Physical discomfort was also greatly reduced. The study concluded that peppermint oil is an effective treatment for easing IBS symptoms.

Does Colpermin cause constipation or diarrhoea?

Colpermin doesn't typically cause constipation, diarrhoea, or change bowel movements. Instead, it helps relieve pain linked to IBS. However, like any medication, there are some possible side effects when using Colpermin. These include:

How does Colpermin compare with Buscopan?

Colpermin has peppermint oil, which is an antispasmodic that helps ease abdominal pain. Buscopan, on the other hand, contains hyoscine butylbromide, another antispasmodic. While both work to relieve spasms, they do so in slightly different ways. This means you might find that one works better for you than the other.

Is Colpermin similar to any other drug?

Yes, Colpermin is quite similar to Buscomint, which is another medication used to treat IBS symptoms. They both have the same active ingredient in the same concentration. The main differences are the manufacturer, the packaging, and the cost.

Another drug that's similar is Mebeverine. While it has a different active ingredient, it works as an antispasmodic just like Colpermin. If one medicine isn't giving you the relief you need, trying a different one might work better for you.
