Dalbecal Description
Dalbecal ointment can help manage psoriasis symptoms in two ways.
It helps to reduce inflammation and slows down the production of skin cells.
You'll usually apply the ointment once daily for four weeks.

What is Dalbecal?

Dalbecal ointment is useful for treating psoriasis symptoms as it helps to reduce swelling and slows down the production of excess keratin, which often causes psoriasis. It contains two active ingredients: betamethasone, a steroid, and calcipotriol, a form of vitamin D, both of which are very effective in managing psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a long-term inflammatory condition that impacts about 60 million people globally. Symptoms can differ, but the most typical ones are white patches with a red or pink border, itching, and dry skin. Treatment often involves steroid creams, vitamin D, or a combination of both, such as Dalbecal. In more severe cases, oral steroid treatment may be necessary.

How does Dalbecal work?

Dalbecal has two active ingredients: calcipotriol and betamethasone.

Calcipotriol is a form of vitamin D, but it's not the same as the vitamin D supplements you might take. It's been altered to work differently. Calcipotriol works by attaching to vitamin D receptors in the cell nucleus, which slows down the growth and production of skin cells. This action helps to lessen scales and rough patches on the skin.
Betamethasone is a strong steroid that helps to lessen swelling, redness, and scaling on your skin.

These medicines work more effectively when used together rather than on their own. This is because each one targets different aspects to help relieve your symptoms.

How long does Dalbecal take to work?

You should start to notice some improvement in your psoriasis within two weeks. However, to experience the full benefits, you may need to continue using it for a bit longer.

What should I do if I make a mistake when taking Dalbecal?

If you forget to apply a dose, do so as soon as you remember, unless it's nearly time for your next dose. If it is, just skip the missed dose. Don't apply a double dose to compensate for the one you missed.

If you've accidentally used more than you should on normal skin, there's no need to worry—simply wash it off with water or a cloth. However, if you've applied more than 15g of Dalbecal in a single day, it could impact your body's calcium levels. In that case, get in touch with your doctor or visit your nearest A&E department for medical advice.

How well does Dalbecal work for psoriasis?

A review of 10 studies looked at how well a combination of calcipotriol and betamethasone worked for treating psoriasis compared to using each treatment on its own. The findings showed that patients using the combined treatment experienced a 40-48% reduction in psoriasis symptoms by the end of the first week, compared to those using the treatments separately or in the control groups. By the fourth week, patients reported an improvement of 46-79%, and similar results were seen by the eighth week.

Serious side effects were rare. In a study lasting 52 weeks, only 4.8% of the 534 patients experienced serious side effects.

How is Dalbecal different from other treatments for psoriasis?

Dalbecal is often suggested as the initial treatment for psoriasis because it combines a steroid with vitamin D, both of which help alleviate symptoms effectively. There's also a cream called Wynzora, which has the same active ingredients in the same amounts, but the difference lies in the formulation. Dalbecal is an ointment, while Wynzora is a cream. If your skin tends to be drier, the ointment might be more suitable, as its thicker texture can help lock in moisture.

If you have psoriasis on your scalp, there are treatments available such as Sebco. This ointment contains tar, salicylic acid, sulphur, and coconut oil, which help to soften and remove dry skin. You can also use steroid shampoos like Etrivex. Unlike regular topical steroids, these shampoos are designed to be easily applied to the scalp without affecting your hair or losing their effectiveness.
