Dermol Description
Dermol is a moisturiser that helps prevent skin infections from spreading and keeps your skin hydrated.
Its antimicrobial properties eliminate infections and prevent them from returning.
Can be used as a ‘leave-on’ cream or a substitute for soap to help hydrate skin.

What is Dermol?

Dermol lotion is an antimicrobial moisturiser designed to help with dry and itchy skin conditions. It has four active ingredients that each play a role in combating microbial infections and making your skin feel softer.

Dermatitis refers to various skin conditions that cause inflammation, like dandruff and eczema. While Dermol doesn't directly address the inflammation, it can help lessen the redness, dryness, and itching that come with it. Additionally, it moisturises the skin, which supports your skin barrier and helps prevent further infections.

How does Dermol work?

Dermol has four active ingredients, each working in its own way. It mainly functions in two ways: as an antimicrobial agent and as an emollient.

The antimicrobial effects are due to benzalkonium chloride and chlorhexidine dihydrochloride.

Benzalkonium chloride is an antimicrobial agent that helps combat bacterial, viral, and fungal infections. It works by breaking down cell membranes, ultimately causing them to die.
Chlorhexidine dihydrochloride is an antiseptic that can eliminate microorganisms and stop them from growing.

The two other active ingredients, liquid paraffin and isopropyl myristate, are emollients that help to rehydrate your skin and lock in moisture. They offer quick relief for dry skin and also support your skin's barrier function.

What happens if I make a mistake when using Dermol?

If you sometimes forget to apply Dermol, there's no need to worry. Just continue using it as you usually do. If it accidentally gets into your eyes, rinse them with water to prevent irritation.

How effective is Dermol for dermatitis?

Although Dermol can’t directly treat dermatitis, it can help reduce the symptoms and prevent it from getting worse.

People with dermatitis often have a dysfunctional skin barrier, making them more likely to catch infections. But Dermol has antibacterial and antiseptic properties, meaning it can kill germs which might otherwise cause infections.

Additionally, a lot of soaps contain chemicals and fragrances which are harsh on eczematous or inflamed skin. They can further dry your skin and cause damage to your skin barrier. This can worsen your condition and make you vulnerable to infections.[popover id=ref3] Using Dermol as a soap substitute can help hydrate your dry skin without irritating it.

One of the main benefits of Dermol is its emollient property. It can instantly hydrate and moisturise your skin, protecting it from dryness and itching. This can help you stop scratching, preventing further damage.

How is Dermol 500 different from other treatments for dermatitis?

Dermol isn't a treatment for dermatitis per se, however it does prevent it from worsening. It can be used daily and is safe to use alongside other medications.

Typical treatment for dermatitis usually involves steroids, which help lower inflammation and redness. There are many types of steroid, each with different potencies (strengths). Stronger steroids, such as Dermovate and Betnovate, are prescribed for severe cases of inflammation. For mild cases, hydrocortisone is often used. The strength of the steroid you use will be decided by your clinician after evaluating the severity of your condition.
