Duoresp Spiromax Description
DuoResp Spiromax is an inhaler that combines two medications.
It controls asthma by stopping symptoms from occurring and easing them when they do.
It is available in two strengths: 60mcg/4.5mcg or 320mcg/9mcg.

What is DuoResp Spiromax?

DuoResp Spiromax is an inhaler used to treat asthma and COPD. It contains budesonide, which helps prevent symptoms, and formoterol, which provides relief.

Budesonide is a medication known as a corticosteroid. Corticosteroids work by reducing the production of chemicals that lead to inflammation and irritation. Gradually, this helps decrease swelling in your lungs, which can prevent your asthma symptoms from worsening.

In the short term, formoterol helps ease any daily symptoms you might have. Just one to three minutes after using your inhaler, formoterol starts working by relaxing your airways, making it easier for you to breathe. These effects last for about 12 hours.

Who is DuoResp Spiromax for?

DuoResp Spiromax is intended to help prevent and ease symptoms for those with asthma or COPD. Your doctor might prescribe DuoResp Spiromax to help you manage your condition better. Even if you have moderate to severe asthma, you can still use a DuoResp Spiromax inhaler. The active ingredients in DuoResp have been shown to reduce flare-ups of asthma and COPD.

What doses does DuoResp Spiromax come in?

DuoResp Spiromax comes in different doses, tailored to how severe your condition is.

The DuoResp Spiromax inhaler, which contains 160 mcg of budesonide and 4.5 mcg of formoterol, is used for moderate COPD and asthma. For more severe cases, a stronger version with 320 mcg and 9 mcg is available.

The DuoResp Spiromax inhaler with the smaller dose contains 120 inhalations, whereas the one with the larger dose contains 60.

How long does it take DuoResp Spiromax to work?

When you inhale your dose of DuoResp, its two ingredients begin to work to ease your symptoms and help prevent them in the future. Formoterol is a type of medicine called a bronchodilator, which helps open up your airways, making it easier to breathe. You should notice relief from immediate symptoms within a few minutes of taking your dose. Since Formoterol is a long-acting bronchodilator, its effects will last for about 12 hours.

Budesonide takes a bit of time to start working. However, within about three to seven days, you should notice less wheezing. If it’s effective, you might find your symptoms are managed well enough that you won't need to use your reliever inhaler as frequently.

What should I do if I make a mistake taking DuoResp Spiromax?

Always follow your clinician's instructions when taking your treatment. If you accidentally use too much of your DuoResp Spiromax inhaler, try not to worry. Usually, this won't cause any side effects, particularly if it's a one-time occurrence.

If you take too much formoterol, you might experience symptoms like shaking, heart palpitations, a headache, and feeling sick. These should go away on their own, but if you're concerned, contact your doctor.

Taking too much budesonide at once usually won't lead to immediate side effects. However, if you use high doses over a long period, it may cause issues like adrenal suppression, where your body doesn't produce enough of certain hormones.

Do I need a prescription for DuoResp Spiromax?

Like most asthma medications, DuoResp Spiromax requires a prescription to ensure it's safe for you. Complete a consultation, and we'll determine if DuoResp is suitable for you. If it's not, we'll suggest some alternatives.

What are alternatives to DuoResp Spiromax?

There are many other combination treatments that have either the same active ingredients as DuoResp or slightly different ones that achieve the same effect. For instance, Seretide inhalers use the active ingredients fluticasone and salmeterol, but they function in the same manner.

Symbicort inhalers are another option that include budesonide and formoterol. However, a real-world study found that people using DuoResp Spiromax had fewer exacerbations, needed their reliever inhaler less often, and were more likely to maintain stable treatment compared to those using Symbicort.

How effective is DuoResp Spiromax?

DuoResp Spiromax, which combines budesonide and formoterol, has been shown to greatly lower both mild and severe asthma flare-ups. A large real-world study found that individuals using budesonide and formoterol experienced fewer asthma symptoms compared to those using salmeterol and fluticasone. For those with COPD, the combination of budesonide and formoterol reduced flare-ups by more than 25% compared to using formoterol on its own.

Is DuoResp a steroid inhaler?

Yes, DuoResp Spiromax includes the corticosteroid budesonide. This helps to reduce swelling in the lungs and manages asthma and COPD symptoms over time. Inhalers that don't contain a corticosteroid are usually referred to as 'reliever' inhalers, and they provide quick relief from asthma symptoms when they occur.

Can you use DuoResp Spiromax for COPD?

Yes, you might be given DuoResp Spiromax to help manage your COPD symptoms, like trouble with breathing.

Can you use DuoResp Spiromax during pregnancy?

If you're planning to have a baby or suspect you might be pregnant while using DuoResp Spiromax, it's important to talk to your doctor. Ideally, seek advice before starting DuoResp. If you become pregnant while on DuoResp, don't stop using it, but make sure to consult your doctor straight away.
