What is Elocon?

Elocon comes in cream, ointment, and scalp lotion forms. You can use the cream and ointment on any part of your body, but do check with your clinician before applying them to your face. The scalp lotion, as the name implies, should only be used on your scalp.

All of these contain mometasone furoate, which belongs to a group of medicines known as corticosteroids, or simply steroids. They are ranked by strength on a potency scale, sometimes referred to as the topical steroid potency ladder or chart.

Mild < Moderately strong < Strong < Very strong

Mometasone furoate is part of the potent corticosteroid group. These stronger steroids are effective for treating more severe conditions and areas with thicker skin, like your palms and the soles of your feet.

What is Elocon used for?

It's used to treat dry, itchy, or scaly skin conditions such as psoriasis and atopic eczema. Atopic eczema, also called atopic dermatitis, causes your skin to become dry and itchy. Dry skin can become cracked and painful. It often appears on your hands, inner elbows, behind your knees, face, and scalp. It's usually triggered by allergens like soap, cold weather, pollen, or pet fur, which is why it's called "atopic," meaning sensitive to allergens.

Elocon is sometimes used for discoid and dyshidrotic eczema, even though it's not officially listed for these conditions. This is known as "off-label" use. It's a common practice, supported by enough evidence to justify its use in this manner.

Discoid eczema, which you might also hear called discoid dermatitis or nummular eczema, shows up as oval or coin-shaped patches on your skin. These patches are usually quite itchy and can either leak clear fluid or become dry and crusty. It often appears after skin injuries such as burns or insect bites.

Dyshidrotic eczema, or pompholyx, leads to itchy, fluid-filled blisters on your fingers, palms, toes, and the soles of your feet. These blisters can sometimes ooze and usually heal within two to three weeks. However, once they clear, your skin might become dry, cracked, and sometimes painful.

How does Elocon work?

Elocon contains the active ingredient mometasone furoate, which is a strong steroid. It helps to lessen swelling, redness, and itching by reducing inflammation and narrowing blood vessels.

We don't completely understand how corticosteroids work, but we do know that they attach to certain receptors in your cells and then move to the cell nucleus. This process results in the release of molecules that reduce inflammation and a decrease in substances that cause inflammation.

Mometasone furoate is thought to reduce inflammation by blocking certain pathways that cause it and by lowering the production of inflammatory substances such as cytokines and leukotrienes.

What forms of Elocon are there?

Elocon comes in three types: cream, ointment, and scalp lotion. Each form contains the same amount of the active ingredient, mometasone furoate, at 0.1% (which means each gram has 1mg of mometasone furoate).

How long does Elocon take to work for eczema?

You'll typically use it for only a few days. If your clinician suggests applying mometasone on your face, it's usually safe to do so for up to five days. If your skin doesn't improve or worsens after 14 days of using Elocon, you should consult your clinician.

What should I do if I make a mistake when using Elocon for eczema?

If you accidentally swallow Elocon, there's generally no need to worry. However, if you're concerned, it's a good idea to consult your doctor.

If you've been using it for a long time, don't stop all of a sudden. It's best to ask your clinician to help you slowly reduce the dose.

If you forget to use it at your regular time, simply apply it when you remember and carry on as normal.

Can you buy Elocon over the counter?

No, you can't get Elocon over the counter. The cream, ointment, and scalp lotion forms are only available with a prescription. They contain a strong steroid called mometasone furoate, so it's important to use them exactly as your clinician advises and under their guidance.

Does Elocon contain a steroid?

Yes, Elocon includes mometasone furoate, a strong topical corticosteroid. More powerful steroids like Elocon are better suited for more severe skin conditions and thicker skin areas, such as the palms and soles. In contrast, milder steroids like hydrocortisone are safer for long-term use, on larger skin areas, on your face, or on sensitive skin, particularly in children.

Can Elocon be used on broken skin?

You should not apply Elocon to cuts or broken skin. If you do, it may be absorbed into your bloodstream, potentially causing side effects such as high blood sugar, thinning of the skin, adrenal gland issues, or vision problems.

Can I use Elocon for eczema on my face?

Be sure to consult your clinician before applying it to your face, as Elocon can occasionally worsen facial conditions like rosacea. If your clinician approves, apply a thin layer of Elocon to the affected area once daily. However, avoid using it on your face for more than five days to prevent skin thinning.

How well does Elocon work for eczema?

Elocon contains the active ingredient mometasone furoate, which has been shown to work well with a low chance of side effects when used for up to 12 weeks.

For adults dealing with skin conditions such as eczema, 0.1% mometasone furoate cream has been found to be more effective than milder corticosteroids like hydrocortisone 1.0%. Research also indicates that using it once a day works just as well as applying similar strength steroids, like Betnovate, twice a day. However, it isn't as strong as the very potent clobetasol propionate 0.05% cream for treating eczema.
