Epaderm Description
Epaderm provides fragrance-free moisture to calm dry, itchy eczema.
It helps to moisturise and hydrate dry skin.
Comes in a cream or ointment form for treating eczema directly.

What is Epaderm?

Epaderm is an emollient that has been clinically shown to hydrate and moisturise your skin. It doesn't contain any harsh chemicals or fragrances, which makes it safe and suitable for managing eczema symptoms. As there is no cure for eczema at the moment, treatments generally focus on lessening the severity of your symptoms or stopping them from worsening.

There are different types of eczema, with atopic eczema being the most common. It's known for causing dry, itchy skin that can become inflamed and infected. Another type is discoid eczema, which appears as bumps and patches on the skin, often on the hands and feet. It's important to get an accurate diagnosis before starting treatment, as each type of eczema requires a different approach.

How does Epaderm work?

Epaderm is made with ingredients such as glycerin and paraffin that help to moisturise dry skin. Glycerin works by holding water in the outer layer of your skin, known as the stratum corneum, which helps keep your skin hydrated by preventing water loss. Paraffin forms a protective barrier on your skin, which helps keep out germs and irritants, reducing inflammation, redness, and itching. It also adds an oily layer to your skin, which helps lock in moisture and further prevents water loss.

This means Epaderm can help repair the skin barrier that's often harmed in eczema-prone skin, providing protection against future flare-ups, irritants, and complications.

What Epaderm products are there?

Epaderm offers two products: a cream and an ointment. They both have similar ingredients and are excellent for treating dry skin. The key difference is that the ointment is thicker and more oily, which makes it better at preventing water loss from your skin and helping to repair your skin barrier.

How long does Epaderm take to work?

Epaderm can quickly moisturise your skin when you use it, but it won't completely cure your eczema. Since there's no cure for eczema, treatments aim to lessen your symptoms. Epaderm can help ease your symptoms, but if your eczema is quite severe, you may need extra treatment with steroids.

How well does Epaderm work for eczema?

A study was conducted to see how effective Epaderm is for treating dry skin. The treatment lasted for four weeks, with results noted at the end of the second and fourth weeks. Here's what was found from 114 patients:

Is Epaderm useful in wet wrap therapy?

Certainly! After you've applied Epaderm, use a damp bandage to wrap around the affected area to keep it moisturised. Then, cover it with a dry bandage to help prevent scratching, which can worsen your eczema.

Wet wrap therapy (WWT) offers a range of benefits, including:

Some studies have shown mixed results regarding the effectiveness of WWT in treating eczema. While it offers many benefits, not everyone will respond the same way. Since each person experiences different symptoms, it's important to remember that what works for someone else might not be the best option for you.

How does Epaderm compare with other treatments for eczema?

Epaderm is an emollient that helps to treat eczema and keep your skin moisturised. However, for moderate to severe eczema, topical steroids such as Dermovate and Betnovate are advised. These help to reduce inflammation and itching, effectively managing your symptoms.

If your eczema gets infected, your doctor may prescribe antibiotics that you apply to your skin or take by mouth to treat the infection. There's also Fucidin H, a combined treatment that includes fusidic acid, an antibiotic, and hydrocortisone acetate, a steroid.

Is Epaderm available prescription-free?

Yes, you can get Epaderm without a prescription, but it's only sold at registered pharmacies. This ensures a pharmacist or healthcare professional can confirm it's safe and appropriate for you.
