Etrivex Description
Etrivex is a steroid shampoo used to treat psoriasis on the scalp.
It helps to lessen swelling and itching, and also gets rid of any dry scales.
You apply it to your scalp daily, and the treatment usually lasts between two and four weeks.

What is Etrivex?

Etrivex is a steroid shampoo used to treat scalp psoriasis. It contains a potent topical steroid that helps reduce swelling and itching, and it also aids in removing dry skin from your scalp. Scalp psoriasis is a long-term condition marked by scaly patches. It can resemble dandruff or other conditions like seborrhoeic dermatitis, so it's advisable to consult your clinician before deciding on a treatment.

Treating scalp psoriasis is a bit different from treating psoriasis on other parts of the body because the treatments need to be specially designed for the scalp. Etrivex is an example of a steroid shampoo used for this purpose. You can also find over-the-counter products with ingredients like tar or salicylic acid, which help to clear away dead skin from your scalp.

How does Etrivex work?

Scalp psoriasis occurs when there's an excess of keratin, the protein that's typically found in your nails and hair. This leads to the development of tough, scaly patches on your scalp that can be difficult to get rid of.

Clobetasol propionate, the active ingredient in Etrivex, is effective for treating scalp psoriasis due to its various properties. Its anti-inflammatory effects help reduce swelling by preventing certain molecules from causing inflammation. Additionally, it acts as an anti-pruritic, which means it helps stop itching and prevents you from scratching and making your symptoms worse.

What should I do if I make a mistake when using Etrivex?

If you accidentally apply too much to your scalp, there's no need to worry—simply wash off the extra. However, if you've been using it for longer than advised, it's best to get in touch with your clinician. Prolonged use of steroid products can lead to withdrawal symptoms.

If you forget to apply a dose, just skip it and continue with your usual schedule. Avoid applying a double dose to make up for the one you missed.

How is Etrivex different from other treatments for scalp psoriasis?

Topical steroids are usually the go-to treatment for scalp psoriasis. They work well to lessen and clear up psoriasis symptoms within a few weeks, and they come in various strengths to suit your specific needs. Etrivex contains clobetasol propionate, which is one of the strongest steroids available. However, if your psoriasis is mild, your clinician might recommend a milder steroid treatment, such as Betnovate scalp application.

You can also try other products, such as Sebco, to help nourish your scalp and get rid of dry scales. It has three active ingredients that address different issues: coconut oil moisturises your scalp, tar helps reduce swelling, and sulphur and salicylic acid work to remove dry scales.

How well does Etrivex work for scalp psoriasis?

Research has demonstrated that Etrivex is an effective treatment for scalp psoriasis. In a study involving 168 patients with this condition, 42% of those who regularly used 0.05% clobetasol propionate saw their psoriasis completely clear up within four weeks, while only 2% in the control group experienced the same results.
