Femoston Description
Femoston is a hormone replacement therapy (HRT) tablet that combines two hormones.
It includes oestrogen and progesterone, and can help relieve menopause symptoms.
The tablets come in both continuous and cyclical forms.

What is Femoston?

Femoston is a type of hormone replacement therapy known as a combined treatment, as it contains both oestrogen and progesterone hormones. It is available in tablet form and can be taken either continuously or in cycles.

Continuous treatment is generally given to women who haven't had a period for at least a year, while cyclical treatment is for those who haven't had a period in at least six months. Femoston isn't suitable for women who have had a hysterectomy. If this applies to you, please get in touch with our clinicians, and they will help find a suitable alternative.

How does Femoston work?

Menopause happens when a woman no longer ovulates and her periods come to an end. It's not just the monthly bleeding that stops; oestrogen levels drop significantly too. This can lead to uncomfortable symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, and trouble sleeping.

Hormone replacement therapy, or HRT, is important at this stage of life as it replaces the hormones your body no longer makes, helping to ease menopause symptoms. Femoston helps by supplementing the decrease in oestrogen. However, using oestrogen alone can raise the risk of certain cancers. The progesterone in Femoston helps lower this risk by balancing the oestrogen.

What doses of Femoston are there?

There are several different types of Femoston available.

Femoston 1/10mg and Femoston 2/10mg are the cyclical forms of the pill, and each pack includes tablets with just oestrogen and tablets with a combination of hormones. In sequential therapy, you'll take the oestrogen-only tablets for the first 14 days of the month, followed by the combined tablets for the next 14 days.

Femoston 0.5/2.5mg and Femoston 1/5mg are the continuous forms of the tablet.

How long does it take Femoston to work?

You might not notice the full effects of taking Femoston straight away, but you should begin to feel a change after a few weeks. Our clinician will regularly check in with you to ensure the treatment is effective for you.

If you haven't noticed any improvement after some time, it could mean the treatment isn't effective. If so, our clinician will suggest a different HRT medication for you.

What should I do if I make a mistake when taking Femoston?

If you forget to take a dose of Femoston and it's been less than 12 hours, go ahead and take it, then continue with your next dose at the usual time. However, if it's been over 12 hours, simply skip the missed dose and take the next one as scheduled. Avoid taking two tablets to catch up; just carry on with your treatment as normal.

If you accidentally take too many pills, try not to worry. The active ingredients in Femoston have low toxicity. However, if you do take an overdose, you might feel nauseous, vomit, have tender breasts, feel dizzy, experience abdominal pain, drowsiness, fatigue, or withdrawal bleeding. If any of these symptoms occur, it's important to get medical help straight away.

How is Femoston different from other HRTs?

Hormone replacement therapy medication is available in several forms. You can use skin patches, oestrogen gel that you apply to your skin, implants placed under your skin, vaginal oestrogen for the inside walls of your vagina, testosterone gel for your skin, and tablets.

If you've been on the contraceptive pill for a while, you might find it easier to adjust to taking HRT tablets, as you'll continue taking a tablet at the same time each day. Feel free to reach out to us, and one of our healthcare professionals will help you choose the best HRT medication for your needs.

Is Femoston similar to any other treatments?

There are various HRT treatments available,

Some combined HRT tablets, like Elleste, Novofem, and Trisiquens, are similar to Femoston. However, they aren't exactly the same because each one has a slightly different mix of active ingredients. Have a chat with our clinical team about your health, and they'll help you decide which option might be best for you.

Which version and dose of Femoston should I use?

The type and dosage of Femoston you are prescribed will be based on when you last had a natural period, the severity of your menopause symptoms, and whether you've used HRT before.

Femoston Conti 1mg/5mg isn't suitable if your last period was less than a year ago. Similarly, Femoston 1/10 mg and Femoston 2/10 mg aren't right for you if your last period was less than six months ago.

Have a chat with us about your health, and our clinician will suggest the most suitable version and dosage of Femoston for you.

Do I need a prescription for Femoston?

Yes, you can only obtain Femoston with a prescription. Speak to one of our clinicians to ensure it's safe for you and so they can keep an eye on your treatment.
