Fybogel Mebeverine Description
Fybogel Mebeverine is used to treat symptoms of IBS.
It helps ease constipation and tummy pain linked to IBS.
You might need to wait up to 24 hours to notice the full effects.

What is Fybogel Mebeverine?

Fybogel Mebeverine is a medication used to relieve IBS symptoms. It has two active ingredients: ispaghula husk and mebeverine hydrochloride. Ispaghula husk comes from a plant that's naturally rich in fibre, making it a laxative often used for constipation. The other ingredient, mebeverine hydrochloride, is an antispasmodic, which helps stop spasms. Together, these ingredients help manage IBS symptoms.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common condition that impacts your digestive system, which includes the mouth, stomach, intestines, and more. Typical symptoms are bloating, diarrhoea, constipation, and pain in the lower abdomen. While IBS is widespread, there isn't a cure. For many, it's a long-term condition, but taking medication like Fybogel Mebeverine can help ease some of the symptoms.

How does Fybogel Mebeverine work?

As we discussed, IBS often causes discomfort in the lower abdomen. This happens because the intestines contract or tighten, which is called a spasm. Those with IBS might also notice changes in their stool, such as it being looser or harder, or they might go to the toilet more or less often than usual.

Fybogel Mebeverine addresses both issues effectively. Mebeverine hydrochloride helps by relaxing the muscles in your intestines, which stops spasms and eases pain in the lower abdomen. Ispaghula husk works by trapping water in the intestine, which softens stools and makes them easier to pass. The extra water can also help you go to the toilet more often, which is useful for treating constipation. Since IBS-related spasms can be relieved by going to the toilet, a laxative like ispaghula husk can be beneficial.

Fybogel Mebeverine contains active ingredients that help stop gut spasms and keep your bowel movements regular, which can relieve IBS symptoms.

Who can take Fybogel Mebeverine?

Fybogel Mebeverine is suitable for most adults and children over 12. However, you should avoid taking it if you have any of the following conditions:

Bowel blockage.
Weak muscles or reduced bowel movement.
Trouble swallowing or any issues with your throat.
Severe constipation or blood in your stool.
A sudden change in your bowel habits that has been going on for over 2 weeks.

How long does Fybogel Mebeverine take to work?

Fybogel Mebeverine may take between 12 to 24 hours to show its full effects. The treatment can continue for up to 2 weeks. If your symptoms haven't improved or have worsened after 2 weeks, it's important to speak with our clinicians about what to do next.

What happens if I miss a dose of Fybogel Mebeverine?

If you forget to take a dose, just skip it and carry on with your next dose as normal.

If you accidentally take more Fybogel Mebeverine than advised, you should drink more water to help prevent side effects.

What are the side effects of Fybogel Mebeverine?

Fybogel Mebeverine may cause side effects in some individuals. Some of the side effects associated with taking Fybogel Mebeverine include:

What is the difference between Fybogel Mebeverine and Fybogel?

Fybogel Mebeverine and Fybogel are two separate medications. Fybogel Mebeverine has two active ingredients: ispaghula husk and mebeverine hydrochloride, and it's often used for treating IBS. On the other hand, Fybogel contains only ispaghula husk and is used to relieve constipation.

How does Fybogel Mebeverine compare to other drugs?

Colofac and Buscopan are two alternative treatments for IBS. Colofac includes the active ingredient mebeverine hydrochloride, which is also found in Fybogel Mebeverine.

Buscopan is a medication used to relieve IBS symptoms and contains the active ingredient hyoscine butylbromide.

This is another antispasmodic, similar to mebeverine. It helps relax the muscles in your stomach, which can prevent stomach cramps.

The choice depends on your symptoms. If you're experiencing stomach cramps, Buscopan might be suitable. However, if you're dealing with constipation and spasms, Fybogel Mebeverine could be a better fit. IBS varies from person to person, so it's important to select what best addresses your symptoms.

When can’t I take Fybogel Mebeverine?

Avoid using Fybogel Mebeverine if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.

Try not to take Fybogel Mebeverine within 30 to 60 minutes before or after using insulin, or after taking thyroid medication. If you have any questions, feel free to contact our clinicians.
