Glimepiride Description
Glimepiride is a tablet that helps control blood sugar levels.
It helps the pancreas to make more insulin.
There are four doses: 1mg, 2mg, 3mg and 4mg.

What is Glimepiride?

Glimepiride is a tablet you take to manage high blood sugar levels due to type-2 diabetes. It's part of a group of medicines known as sulfonylureas, which work by encouraging your pancreas to produce more insulin.

Type-2 diabetes typically develops in adults and happens when your body either doesn't produce enough insulin or your cells become less responsive to it. Insulin is crucial for turning the sugar you consume into energy. When this process is disrupted, it results in higher sugar levels in your blood (known as hyperglycaemia), which can negatively affect your health over time.

How does Glimepiride work?

Sulfonylureas, such as Glimepiride, help reduce your blood sugar levels by encouraging your pancreas to produce more insulin. They achieve this by attaching to the beta cells in your pancreas, which closes the potassium channels. This action starts a chain reaction that alters the cell's electrical charge and allows calcium to enter the cell. The increase in calcium within the beta cells of your pancreas then prompts a higher release of insulin.

With more insulin, your body can more effectively use the sugar you consume, moving it from your bloodstream into your cells.

What doses of Glimepiride are there?

Glimepiride is available in 1mg, 2mg, 3mg, and 4mg doses. Typically, you'll begin with a low dose, which may be increased based on how well you respond to the medication.

How long does it take Glimepiride to work?

Glimepiride usually starts lowering your blood sugar levels within 2-3 hours. However, since diabetes often doesn't show symptoms, you might not feel any different when you take it. This doesn't mean it's not effective. It may also take a few weeks before you notice an improvement in your HbA1c, which is the test that measures your average blood glucose over the past three months.

What should I do if I make a mistake when taking Glimepiride?

If you accidentally take too much Glimepiride, it can cause hypoglycaemia, which can be dangerous. You should consume some sugar and get medical help and advice. If you miss a dose of Glimepiride, just skip it and continue as usual. Do not take a double dose to make up for the one you missed.

Is Glimepiride similar to any other treatments?

There are several treatments in the sulfonylureas category, and you may notice that some work better for you than others. Each active ingredient in this group can vary in terms of dosage, absorption, and how they're metabolised.

There are no branded versions of Glimepiride. While there are other sulfonylurea treatments available, no other medicines work exactly the same way in the body as Glimepiride does.

How is Glimepiride different from other type-2 diabetes treatments?

Glimepiride is part of a group of medicines known as sulfonylureas. These work in a similar way to help lower your blood sugar levels. However, there are various other diabetes treatments available that can reduce blood sugar levels through different methods. These include:

Each treatment works in its own way, and it's quite normal to need a combination of two or more treatments. Usually, you'll begin with metformin if it's appropriate for you, and then try other treatments if metformin isn't effective or stops working.
