Glucophage Sr Description
Glucophage SR is a tablet used to treat diabetes.
It helps lower blood sugar levels by decreasing the amount of glucose your body produces.
You should see an improvement in your blood sugar levels within a few days.

What is Glucophage SR?

Glucophage SR is a tablet used to treat non-diabetic hyperglycaemia, often referred to as pre-diabetes. Individuals with non-diabetic hyperglycaemia have blood sugar levels that are above normal, but not high enough to be classified as type 2 diabetes. It's important to manage elevated blood sugar levels early to help prevent type 2 diabetes, and that's where medicines like Glucophage SR can help.

It can also assist with type 2 diabetes by helping to keep your blood sugar levels in check. It's often a suitable choice if changes to your diet and exercise haven't successfully managed your diabetes. Glucophage SR is a slow-release version of Glucophage, a medicine that helps lower your blood sugar. The slow-release aspect means the medication works over a longer period, so you don't need to take the tablets as frequently.

How does Glucophage SR work?

Glucophage SR contains the active ingredient metformin hydrochloride. It's a type of medicine known as a biguanide, which helps reduce the excess production of glucose in your liver. It boosts the activity of an enzyme called AMPK, helping your cells respond more effectively to the insulin in your body, which aids in controlling your blood sugar levels.

It also aids in reabsorbing glucose from your blood, which helps to reduce and stabilise your blood sugar levels. This means your hyperglycaemia or type 2 diabetes can be managed, allowing you to live your life normally.

What doses of Glucophage SR are there?

Glucophage SR is available in three tablet sizes: 500mg, 750mg, and 1000mg. Most people begin with the lowest dose of 500mg. After around two weeks, your dose may be adjusted. Your clinician will keep an eye on your progress and regularly check how the treatment is going.

The highest daily amount of Glucophage SR you should take is 2000mg, which is four 500mg tablets. However, most people require much less. Your doctor may prescribe Glucophage SR on its own or alongside other diabetes medications or insulin, depending on how severe your condition is.

How long does it take Glucophage SR to work?

Glucophage SR is a slow-release medicine, so it won't lower your blood sugar levels straight away. However, you should start to see a change within a few days. It gradually accumulates in your body, so it may take four or five days to work fully. If you've been on Glucophage SR for more than a week and haven't noticed much change in your blood sugar levels, get in touch with our clinician. They can assess your treatment and help determine if you need a higher dose or a different type of treatment.

What should I do if I make a mistake when taking Glucophage SR?

If you accidentally take more Glucophage SR than you should, try not to worry. Overdosing on Glucophage SR is rare, and you’ll probably be alright. However, if you experience any unusual symptoms after taking the tablets, seek emergency medical help. A healthcare professional can keep an eye on your symptoms and provide treatment if needed. If you miss a dose of your Glucophage SR, just take your next one at the usual time. Never take two doses to make up for a missed one.

Do I need a prescription for Glucophage SR?

Yes, you'll need a prescription to obtain Glucophage SR. This is because it's specifically for individuals with type-2 diabetes or non-diabetic hyperglycaemia. A healthcare professional will need to confirm it's appropriate for you before you start using it.

They'll also want to keep in touch with you during your treatment to ensure everything is going smoothly and your blood sugar levels are improving. If you're considering whether Glucophage SR is suitable for you, feel free to discuss your health with one of our clinicians.

How effective is Glucophage SR?

Glucophage SR is a good option for managing non-diabetic hyperglycaemia, as it helps to gradually reduce your blood sugar levels. Research indicates that Glucophage SR can lower the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 31% in those with non-diabetic hyperglycaemia.

Don't forget that making changes to your lifestyle is important for managing non-diabetic hyperglycaemia and type 2 diabetes. Being more active and eating a balanced diet can help control your condition and enhance the effectiveness of Glucophage SR.

In a study involving 886 individuals with type 2 diabetes, it was found that sustained-release metformin was just as effective as the instant-release version in managing blood sugar levels and aiding weight loss. Additionally, the sustained-release form resulted in fewer side effects and less stomach discomfort.

Can I drink alcohol on Glucophage SR?

While you're taking Glucophage SR, it's best to limit or avoid alcohol altogether. Make sure not to drink regularly or exceed two units of alcohol a day. This is roughly equivalent to a pint of lower strength beer or cider, or a small glass of wine.

Consuming excessive alcohol while taking Glucophage SR can lead to a serious condition known as lactic acidosis. This occurs when lactic acid accumulates, potentially affecting your liver and kidneys, and in severe cases, it can lead to a coma.

To stay safe, it's usually best to stop drinking altogether while you're on treatment.

Is Glucophage SR similar to any other treatments?

Glucophage SR is the brand name for Metformin. They both contain the same active ingredient and should function in much the same way. The primary differences are how the tablets look and their cost. You can purchase Metformin, the generic version of Glucophage SR, in either an immediate-release or slow-release form.

There's also an immediate release version of Glucophage SR. This one can sometimes lead to more side effects, such as an upset stomach. You'll also need to take it more frequently than the slow-release version, which might be less convenient. Our clinician can assist you in choosing the version that's best for you.
