Invokana Description
Invokana is a type of medication known as an SGLT2 inhibitor.
It helps lower blood sugar levels by making your body pass more sugar through urine.
Research indicates that Invokana might also be beneficial for kidney and heart health.

What is Invokana?

Invokana is a tablet used to treat type-2 diabetes by helping to reduce your blood sugar levels. It's part of a group of medicines known as SGLT2 inhibitors, which help your body get rid of more sugar and sodium through urine. This process may also benefit your kidney health and reduce the risk of heart issues.

You can take it by itself, but it's often used alongside other treatments to help reduce your blood sugar levels. This is usually the case when diet and exercise haven't been sufficient and other treatments haven't worked completely.

How does Invokana work?

Type-2 diabetes is a condition that usually develops in adulthood, causing high levels of glucose in the blood. This occurs either because your pancreas doesn't produce enough insulin, or because your cells have become less responsive to insulin. Insulin is a crucial hormone for processing the sugar you consume.

Invokana is a type of medicine that doesn't change how much insulin your body makes or how your cells respond to insulin. Instead, it works by blocking the hormone 'SGLT-2', which normally helps your kidneys reabsorb sugar and sodium. As a result, more glucose is passed out of your body in your urine, which helps reduce the amount of glucose in your blood.

What doses of Invokana are there?

Invokana comes in two doses: 100mg and 300mg. The dose your doctor prescribes will be based on your condition and overall health.

How long does it take Invokana to work?

After taking Invokana for a few weeks, your blood sugar levels should begin to decrease. However, since diabetes often doesn't cause noticeable symptoms, you might not feel any different. This doesn’t mean the medication isn't effective. Your HbA1c, which measures your average blood sugar levels over the past 2-3 months, will be checked regularly during your treatment. If there's no improvement, your doctor may consider prescribing a different or additional medication.

What should I do if I make a mistake when taking Invokana?

If you've taken more Invokana than you should, it's important to get medical assistance immediately. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it's nearly time for your next dose. In that case, just skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Avoid taking two doses to make up for the one you missed.

How is Invokana different from other treatments for diabetes?

There are various treatments available for diabetes, each working differently to help lower your blood sugar levels. Metformin is the most commonly prescribed initial treatment, as it helps your body manage insulin more effectively. If metformin isn't effective or suitable for you, your doctor may recommend other treatments to help control your blood sugar.

Invokana is a type of medicine known as an 'SGLT-2 inhibitor', which helps to lower blood sugar levels. Unlike most diabetes treatments that either boost insulin production or make your cells more responsive to insulin, SGLT-2 inhibitors work differently. They help reduce blood sugar by increasing the amount of glucose expelled in your urine. In addition to lowering blood sugar, Invokana can also help reduce pressure on your kidneys and slow down the progression of diabetic kidney disease.

Is Invokana similar to any other treatments?

There are other SGLT-2 inhibitors that work in a similar way to lower your blood sugar levels, although they contain different active ingredients than Invokana. This means that some SGLT-2 inhibitors might be more or less effective or suitable for you, depending on how your body reacts to them.

Another treatment option that uses canagliflozin as its active ingredient is Vokanamet. Unlike Invokana, which is a single-action treatment, Vokanamet also includes metformin. This might be a better choice for you if you need to take metformin in addition to Invokana.

Which dose of Invokana should I use?

You'll usually begin with a lower dose to see how your body reacts. If needed, you may then move to a higher dose. However, if you have a condition that makes it safer, you might stay on the lower dose.

Once you've discussed your health with us, our clinician can recommend the most appropriate dose for you.
