Janumet Description
Janumet is a tablet that includes sitagliptin and metformin.
It helps by boosting insulin production and lowering the release of sugar.
You should take it twice a day with meals.

What is Janumet?

Janumet is a medication designed to assist individuals with type 2 diabetes in managing their blood sugar levels. It's available as a tablet taken once a day, containing two active ingredients: 50 mg of sitagliptin and 1000 mg of metformin.

Type 2 diabetes is a long-term condition that can be influenced by your lifestyle choices. The likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes goes up if you have the following factors:

Excess weight
Inactive lifestyle
Raised blood pressure
Pre-diabetes
Diabetes that develops during pregnancy

Moreover, individuals over 45 and those from certain ethnic backgrounds have a greater chance of developing type 2 diabetes. If type 2 diabetes runs in your family, you might be at risk as well.

How does Janumet work?

Janumet contains two active ingredients: sitagliptin and metformin. These medicines work in different ways to help people with type 2 diabetes manage their blood sugar levels.

Sitagliptin is a type of medicine known as a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor, or DPP-4 inhibitor. These medicines, including sitagliptin, work by raising the levels of hormones called incretins in your body. Incretins help your pancreas produce insulin and also reduce the amount of sugar your liver releases.

Metformin is a type of medicine called a biguanide. It helps lower the amount of sugar your liver releases into your blood. It also reduces how much glucose your gut absorbs and improves how your body takes in and uses glucose. This helps keep your blood sugar levels steady, which can prevent more serious symptoms of type 2 diabetes.

What doses of Janumet are there?

Janumet comes in just one strength. Each tablet includes 50 mg of sitagliptin and 1000 mg of metformin.

How long does it take Janumet to work?

After a few hours of taking Janumet, your blood sugar levels should become more stable. To keep them steady, make sure to take it every day as instructed by your clinician.

If your blood sugar levels aren't improving as you'd hoped with Janumet, have a chat with our clinician. There might be a different treatment that's better suited for you.

What should I do if I make a mistake when taking Janumet?

If you forget to take Janumet, there's no need to worry. Just take it as soon as you remember, unless it's nearly time for your next dose. In that case, simply skip the missed dose and carry on with your usual schedule. Avoid taking a double dose to make up for the one you missed.

Taking too much Janumet can lead to a condition known as lactic acidosis. This happens when there's an excess of lactic acid in your bloodstream.

The usual symptoms of lactic acidosis are vomiting, stomach pain, muscle cramps, tiredness, trouble breathing, a drop in body temperature, and a slowed heartbeat. This condition is very dangerous and can be life-threatening. Therefore, if you've taken too much Janumet, it's crucial to get emergency medical help straight away.

How is Janumet different from other treatments for type 2 diabetes?

Janumet is a brand-name medicine that contains both sitagliptin and metformin hydrochloride. At the moment, you can't get this combination of ingredients as a generic medicine or under any other brand.

Diabetes is often treated with just one medication, like metformin. However, Janumet is different because it works in two ways simultaneously. Sitagliptin boosts the amount of insulin your body produces, while metformin lowers the glucose released by your liver.

Your medical history will assist our clinician in determining if Janumet is the right option for you.

Is Janumet similar to any other treatments?

There are other medicines that have either sitagliptin or metformin in them. Janumet is the only one that includes both. Our clinician might start by prescribing sitagliptin or metformin on their own to check if they are effective for you. If they aren't, a combination treatment like Janumet might be recommended.

Who is Janumet for?

Our clinician might prescribe Janumet for you if metformin, sitagliptin, or other single treatments aren't enough to keep your blood sugar levels stable.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should not take Janumet. If you have serious side effects, such as a severe allergic reaction, stop taking Janumet straight away and get emergency medical help.

Do I need a prescription for Janumet?

You can't buy Janumet over the counter because it's a strong medication that can lead to hypoglycaemia, lactic acidosis, or other serious, potentially life-threatening conditions. Our clinician will need to keep an eye on you for any side effects and ensure that Janumet is working as it should.

Important Information

Janumet isn't right for everyone, and there are a few things you should know when using it.

Recent studies suggest that metformin, an ingredient in Janumet, may impact sperm quality. Men who are trying to conceive should talk to their diabetes doctor or nurse to see if Janumet is suitable for them.

Here's all the official information on it. If anything isn't clear, just let our clinician know, and they can discuss it with you.
