Jardiance Description
Jardiance is part of a newer group of medicines known as SGLT-2 inhibitors.
It helps lower blood sugar by making your body pass more sugar through urine.
It comes in two doses: 10mg and 25mg.

What is Jardiance?

Jardiance is a tablet used to treat type-2 diabetes, a condition often developed in adulthood when your pancreas doesn't produce enough insulin, or your body doesn't use insulin effectively. This medicine is part of a group called SGLT-2 inhibitors, which mainly help by increasing the amount of glucose expelled in your urine, thereby reducing your blood sugar levels.

Jardiance offers the extra benefit of removing more sodium from your body, which can help boost your heart health. For this reason, Jardiance is also approved for treating heart failure.

How does Jardiance work?

SGLT-2 inhibitors, such as Jardiance, help lower blood sugar levels by blocking the SGLT-2 protein in your kidneys. This protein normally helps reabsorb glucose, but when its action is stopped, more glucose is removed from your body.

SGLT-2 inhibitors work differently from other diabetes medications because they don't change the amount of insulin you have or how your body uses it. This makes treatments like Jardiance easy to combine with other diabetes medications for a more comprehensive and effective approach.

What doses of Jardiance are there?

Jardiance comes in two strengths: 10mg and 25mg. Typically, the starting dose is one 10mg tablet daily, but your dose may be increased if our clinician believes it would be more beneficial for you.

How long does it take Jardiance to work?

Jardiance starts working in your body quite quickly, but it may take a few weeks to impact your blood sugar levels. Treatments for type-2 diabetes are generally for the long term, and your HbA1c will be monitored regularly to ensure it’s effectively managing your blood sugar. Since type-2 diabetes often doesn't have symptoms, you might not notice any changes when taking Jardiance, but this doesn't mean it isn't doing its job.

What should I do if I make a mistake when taking Jardiance?

If you accidentally take more Jardiance than you should, seek medical help immediately. If you forget to take a dose, you can take it as soon as you remember, provided there's at least a twelve-hour gap before your next dose. If you can't leave a twelve-hour gap, skip the missed dose and carry on with your usual schedule. Don't take a double dose to make up for the one you missed.

Is Jardiance similar to any other treatments?

Jardiance is part of a group of medicines that work similarly, but it's the only one with its specific active ingredient used on its own. This means there aren't any other treatments available that will work exactly the same way to manage your condition.

Synjardy is a combined medication that includes both empagliflozin, found in Jardiance, and metformin. If you've been prescribed metformin with Jardiance, you may find this treatment more convenient to take.

Which dose of Jardiance should I use?

Our clinician will suggest the best dose for you, considering your condition and health requirements. Typically, the starting dose is 10mg per day, and it can be increased if necessary.

If you have any kidney issues, you'll likely be told to take no more than 10mg a day.
