Kliofem Description
Kliofem is a combined HRT tablet that includes estradiol and norethisterone.
It can help ease menopause symptoms such as night sweats and hot flushes.
It's an ongoing treatment, so you'll need to take a tablet every day.

What is Kliofem?

Kliofem is a combined HRT tablet designed to manage menopause symptoms. It's ideal for women who have been postmenopausal and haven't had a period for more than a year.

It's also sometimes used to treat osteoporosis, a condition that can occur after menopause and leads to weak and brittle bones.

Since it's a continuous combined HRT treatment, you'll need to take it every day. The tablets are provided in a calendar pack to help you keep track of your doses.

How does Kliofem work?

During menopause, your ovaries begin to produce less oestrogen. This decrease in oestrogen can lead to symptoms such as discomfort during sex, vaginal dryness, trouble sleeping, hot flushes, night sweats, and feelings of low mood or anxiety.

For some women, these symptoms can be uncomfortable, and the oestrogen in Kliofem, called estradiol, helps to ease them.

On its own, the oestrogen in Kliofem can cause the womb to grow excessively, which might lead to womb cancer if not controlled. This is where the progesterone in combined HRT treatments like Kliofem plays a role. It helps keep the oestrogen balanced.

Who is Kliofem for?

It's a continuous combined type of HRT, which is generally suitable for women who are postmenopausal (those who haven't had a period for a year).

If you're still having periods or if you've had your womb removed, this treatment might not be suitable for you. Our clinician will typically suggest combined sequential or sequential HRT medications if you're still menstruating, or oestrogen-only options if you've had a hysterectomy.

How well does Kliofem work?

A review of a clinical trial for Kliofem revealed these results:

1
After two years of treatment, 91% of patients either maintained or increased their bone mineral density.
2
From the second week onwards, there's a reduction of 70% or more in how often hot flushes occur.
3
By 52 weeks, the average number of bleeding days in a 28-day cycle decreased to less than one.

Kliofem effectively eases postmenopausal symptoms such as hot flushes, vaginal dryness, mood swings, a decreased sex drive, and night sweats.

Are there different doses of Kliofem available?

No, Kliofem is a single tablet that contains 2mg of estradiol and 1mg of norethisterone. If you experience side effects from this dose or it doesn't seem to be working as well as it should, feel free to message our clinician. They can discuss other HRT treatment options with you.

Is Kliofem the same as Elleste Duet?

Not exactly. Both are combined treatments with the same hormones, but Elleste Duet is taken in a sequential manner, whereas Kliofem is taken continuously. With Kliofem, you take the same dose every day, but some Elleste Duet tablets contain only oestrogen. The branding is different as well. Since they're produced by different manufacturers, the packaging and the look of the tablets might vary, and there could be a slight difference in price too.

Will I gain weight with the Kliofem 2mg treatment?

There isn't strong evidence to back this up.

However, the menopause on its own can lead to weight changes, regardless of whether you're using HRT treatments like Kliofem.

Does Kliofem HRT cause bleeding?

During the first three to six months of using Kliofem, you might notice some irregular bleeding. If the bleeding continues beyond six months, please contact our clinician.

Important Information

Kliofem isn't right for everyone, and there are a few things you should know before using it. If you've had a hysterectomy, you won't need the progesterone in Kliofem, and an oestrogen-only HRT would be more suitable for you.

Here's all the official information on it. If you find anything unclear, please let our clinician know, and they can discuss it with you.
