Lansoprazole Capsules Description
It can help ease symptoms like acid reflux and bloating.
It's the generic form of Zoton FasTab and comes in two types.

What is Lansoprazole?

Lansoprazole is used to treat acid reflux and GORD. Acid reflux occurs when stomach acid moves up into your oesophagus and throat, leading to a burning feeling known as heartburn. You might also experience bloating and bad breath. Lansoprazole works by reducing the amount of acid your stomach lining produces.

When acid reflux keeps happening and doesn't go away, it's known as GORD, which stands for Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.

Lansoprazole is the generic form of branded treatments like Zoton FasTab. You can take it as a capsule with water or as a tablet that dissolves in your mouth.

How does Lansoprazole work?

Acid reflux occurs when stomach acid moves past the muscle ring that keeps the lower oesophagus shut, allowing it to enter the food pipe and throat.

Your stomach produces acid to help break down the food you eat, allowing your body to digest it. This acid is made by proton pumps in the lining of your stomach wall. However, sometimes these pumps produce too much acid, which can then travel up into your food pipe.

Lansoprazole works by stopping the proton pumps from making too much acid. This means there's less acid to move up into the oesophagus, helping to prevent heartburn and other symptoms linked to acid reflux and GORD.

What doses of Lansoprazole are there?

Lansoprazole capsules are available in two strengths: 15mg and 30mg. You should swallow them with water, and they can be taken once or twice daily.

There's also an orodispersible tablet option that dissolves on your tongue, so you don't need to take it with water.

For acid reflux, the usual treatment is to take one 30mg tablet or capsule each day for four weeks.

If you find it difficult to swallow the tablet, you can use a syringe. For detailed guidance on using the syringe, please refer to the patient leaflet.

How long does it take Lansoprazole to work?

Lansoprazole begins to work immediately. You'll likely notice relief from symptoms such as acid reflux, heartburn, and indigestion within a few days, but it might take up to four weeks to experience the full benefits.

Lansoprazole typically enters the bloodstream in just under two hours, but if you take it with food, it may take about 50% longer.

What should I do if I make a mistake when taking Lansoprazole?

If you forget to take a dose of Lansoprazole, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it's nearly time for your next dose, just skip the missed one and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose of Lansoprazole. If you accidentally take too much, seek medical advice straight away.

Which version of Lansoprazole should I use?

If you find swallowing tablets difficult or simply don't like doing it, the orodispersible version of Lansoprazole could be a better option for you. It is available in the same doses as the capsules and is just as effective.

You can either let it dissolve in your mouth or mix it with water in a syringe and then squirt it into your mouth.

You should take both the capsules and orodispersible tablets about 30 minutes before eating. If you're unsure which form of Lansoprazole is right for you, it's a good idea to consult a clinician. Often, it just comes down to what you prefer.

How is Lansoprazole different to other treatments for GORD?

Lansoprazole is a generic medication. This means it can be found as a branded product, but the generic version is usually more affordable.

There are other generic and branded treatments for acid reflux and GORD, but few come in a dissolvable tablet form.

Is Lansoprazole similar to any other treatments?

There are various medications available to treat acid reflux and GORD. Despite having different names and being made by different manufacturers, they are generally proton pump inhibitors and function by lowering the acid production in your stomach.

Lansoprazole comes in two forms: a capsule and a dissolvable tablet, allowing you to pick the one you prefer. It's a generic medication, and its branded version is known as Zoton FasTab.

Which dose of Lansoprazole should I use?

How effective is Lansoprazole?

Lansoprazole is a very effective and quick treatment for acid reflux and GORD. It can start relieving symptoms in less than two hours, and symptoms often go away after four weeks of use.

Lansoprazole is very effective for long-term treatment of GORD, providing symptom relief for more than 70% of people who use it for over five years.
