Lisinopril Description
Lisinopril is a tablet you take once a day to manage high blood pressure.
It's an ACE inhibitor, a medicine for high blood pressure that helps to relax the blood vessels.
There are four different doses available, and for high blood pressure, 10mg is generally advised.

What is Lisinopril?

Lisinopril is an ACE inhibitor that helps relax blood vessels to manage high blood pressure. It's available as a tablet that you take once a day. By lowering blood pressure, it helps prevent other health issues linked to hypertension.

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a common condition where the force of blood against the artery walls is too strong. If your blood pressure is over 140/90, it's considered high, and if it's over 180/120, it's seen as severe.

High blood pressure can lead to other health issues, such as heart disease. Some usual causes of hypertension include being overweight, not getting enough exercise, having too much salt in your diet, smoking, drinking too much alcohol, stress, ageing, genetics, chronic kidney disease, or problems with the adrenal or thyroid glands.

Lisinopril is also prescribed for treating heart failure and helping people live longer after a heart attack. Additionally, it's used to prevent kidney issues in those with type 2 diabetes.

How does Lisinopril work?

The tablet contains lisinopril as its active ingredient. Every dose has the same amount of lisinopril.

Lisinopril is an ACE inhibitor, which means it blocks the angiotensin-converting enzyme. This enzyme changes the hormone angiotensin I into angiotensin II. Angiotensin II causes blood vessels to tighten, leading to high blood pressure. By reducing ACE activity, lisinopril lowers the amount of angiotensin II, which helps to lower blood pressure.

What doses of Lisinopril are there?

Lisinopril is available in four different strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 10mg, and 20mg. The 2.5mg and 5mg doses are typically used for heart conditions. For treating high blood pressure, a starting dose of 10mg is usually suggested. If the lower doses aren't effective enough, our clinician might increase it to 20mg.

How long does it take Lisinopril to work?

Lisinopril begins to lower high blood pressure within a few hours, but it might take a few weeks to see the full benefits. If you're using Lisinopril for heart failure, it could be weeks or even months before you notice an improvement. When taking it for high blood pressure or after a heart attack, you might not experience any symptoms. This means you may not feel any different while on Lisinopril, but rest assured, the medicine is still effective. It's crucial to keep taking Lisinopril until your doctor advises you to stop.

What should I do if I make a mistake when taking Lisinopril?

If you miss a dose and it's been less than 12 hours, take it as soon as you remember. If it's been more than 12 hours, just skip that dose and take your next one at the regular time. Avoid taking a double dose to compensate for the missed one.

If you accidentally take more Lisinopril than your doctor has prescribed, it's important to get medical help straight away. Taking too much can lead to dizziness and palpitations.

Be sure to take Lisinopril exactly as your clinician has instructed.

How is Lisinopril different from other treatments for high blood pressure?

Lisinopril is part of a group of medicines known as ACE inhibitors, which are often used to treat high blood pressure. There are other treatments for hypertension as well, such as ARBs (Angiotensin-II Receptor Blockers), CCBs (Calcium Channel Blockers), diuretics, and beta blockers. Each of these works differently to help manage high blood pressure.

Additionally, economic studies indicate that Lisinopril is a more cost-effective treatment compared to other ACE inhibitors.

Is Lisinopril similar to any other treatments?

Lisinopril is a generic ACE inhibitor. Zestril is a branded version that contains Lisinopril as its active ingredient. Both Zestril and Lisinopril work in the same way to treat high blood pressure, but Zestril tends to be pricier because it's a branded product.

There are other treatments on the market that are ACE inhibitors with different active ingredients. They work in a similar way, but there might be slight differences in how effective they are and how suitable they are for each individual.

As with any medication, Lisinopril may lead to side effects for some individuals. Common side effects include a dry cough, dizziness or feeling lightheaded, headaches, diarrhoea, nausea, itching or a mild skin rash, and blurred vision.

Which dose of Lisinopril should I use?

Lisinopril is available in 2.5mg and 5mg doses to help manage heart conditions. If you're taking it for high blood pressure, you'll usually start with a 10mg dose. If this doesn't work well enough, your doctor might increase it to 20mg.

Our clinician can help determine the right treatment dose for you, taking your health history into account.

Do I need a prescription for Lisinopril?

Lisinopril is a medication that requires a prescription, so you can't buy it over the counter. This ensures that our healthcare professionals can confirm it's safe for you to use.
