Lymecycline is an antibiotic used to treat inflamed and irritated skin, as well as painful abscesses. It typically comes in capsule form, taken once a day, though for certain infections, you might be advised to take it twice daily. Conditions such as acne, folliculitis, and hidradenitis suppurativa can lead to bacterial skin infections. Antibiotics help by killing the harmful bacteria, allowing your skin to heal.
Hidradenitis suppurativa is a chronic skin condition that can be quite painful. It often leads to the development of cysts, boils, and blackheads on your skin, which may become infected and ooze pus. Folliculitis is an infection of the hair follicles. It can happen anywhere on your body where hair grows, causing your skin to become red and very irritated.
If your skin shows signs of infection and isn't improving with creams or ointments, your doctor might prescribe systemic antibiotics like Lymecycline.
Skin conditions such as hidradenitis suppurativa and folliculitis can result in fungal and bacterial infections.
When your skin gets infected, it often needs more powerful treatments than just creams and moisturisers that work on the outer layer of your skin. Antibiotics are one option for this. For skin infections, antibiotics can be included in creams applied directly to the affected area, or taken as capsules or tablets that work throughout your body. Lymecycline is one of these oral options—it's a capsule you take, typically once a day, and the active ingredient, lymecycline, is absorbed into your bloodstream.
Lymecycline interferes with essential processes that bacteria require to live. By eliminating the bacteria, these capsules help your immune system combat the infection and repair irritated and damaged skin. If your skin isn't infected, antibiotics generally won't be given.
Lymecycline is part of a group of medicines called tetracyclines, which are broad-spectrum antibiotics. This means they're effective against a variety of bacterial infections.
Responses to the capsules can differ from person to person, so it's hard to predict exactly how effective Lymecycline will be for you. However, there's a lot of evidence showing it can help improve skin conditions. One study compared Lymecycline with minocycline (another type of tetracycline) and found that Lymecycline was an effective treatment for acne. It also caused fewer side effects than minocycline.
Tetracyclines are commonly used in dermatology. Besides their antibacterial effects, they also reduce inflammation, making them a good choice for skin conditions that cause redness and soreness.
Lymecycline comes in 408mg capsules. This is the only strength available, but you may need to adjust your daily dose based on how severe your skin condition and symptoms are.
Tetralysal is the branded form of lymecycline. It has the same amount of active ingredient in the capsules and functions in the same manner.
If you or someone else takes more Lymecycline capsules than recommended, head to your nearest A&E department straight away for assistance.
If you miss taking a capsule at your usual time, you can take it as soon as you remember, as long as it's not too close to your next dose. There's no need to take two doses at once, as this won't make Lymecycline work any better.
Lymecycline is an antibiotic commonly used for treating skin conditions. Another tetracycline, Oxytetracycline, is also prescribed to help reduce inflammation and redness, and it's often used for acne and rosacea.
Tetralysal is the brand name for Lymecycline. It functions in the same way, but if you have concerns about using generic medicines, you might prefer Tetralysal.
Topical treatments can also include antibiotics. Dalacin T is used for various skin conditions. It's a lotion that you apply directly to the affected areas to help reduce inflammation.
All medications can cause side effects, but they don't affect everyone in the same way. Some people might not experience any at all.
Some typical side effects mentioned in the patient information leaflet (PIL) are feeling sick, stomach pain, and diarrhoea. If you experience any of these, they are usually not serious and should improve as your body adjusts to the antibiotics.
If you experience a severe reaction to the capsules, like swelling of the face or trouble breathing, head to your nearest A&E for immediate assistance.
Antibiotics can help treat bacterial infections, but the time they take to work can vary depending on how your body responds to the medication. Lymecycline is unlikely to permanently clear hidradenitis suppurativa or folliculitis, as these conditions often come back.
The capsules can assist in treating a flare-up and should help clear bacterial infections. Once your symptoms are managed, you can explore long-term strategies for managing your condition. Our clinicians are available to answer any questions you might have about skincare routines and can provide professional advice on things you can try.
You'll need a prescription to begin using Lymecycline. Our clinicians can provide one for you once they've confirmed the capsules are a safe option for you.
Skin conditions such as hidradenitis suppurativa, folliculitis, and acne can either lead to or be triggered by bacterial infections that may improve with antibiotics. If you're using over-the-counter products to help manage your skin condition, it's important to check the active ingredients carefully to ensure nothing in the product will irritate your condition or worsen your symptoms.
Lymecycline may not be suitable for everyone when treating hidradenitis suppurativa or folliculitis.
During your consultation, our clinician will identify any health conditions or situations that might mean this medication isn't suitable for you.
If you have liver or kidney issues, an autoimmune condition such as lupus, or if you're pregnant, Lymecycline isn't the right choice for you.
If you're worried about using the capsules for your skin condition, feel free to ask our medical experts. Simply log in to your account and send them a message.
Lymecycline isn't right for everyone, so there are a few things you should be aware of before using it.
