Mebeverine Description
Mebeverine is a medication that helps ease the symptoms of IBS by reducing muscle spasms.
It helps by easing the muscles in the intestines, which lessens cramps and discomfort.
It might take up to an hour to start working, and the effects can last for several hours.

What is Mebeverine?

Mebeverine is used to relieve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). It's an antispasmodic, which means it helps to calm bowel spasms and reduce frequent bowel movements. IBS affects the digestive system and can cause cramps, stomach pain, and irregular bowel habits. While there's no cure for IBS, treatments like this can help manage the symptoms.

How does Mebeverine work?

Mebeverine works primarily as an antispasmodic by focusing on the smooth muscles in the gastrointestinal tract. It relaxes these muscles, stopping spasms in the lower abdomen and gut, which helps ease the discomfort linked to IBS. Additionally, it has a local anaesthetic effect that can lessen sensitivity and pain in the gut.

What versions of Mebeverine are there?

Mebeverine comes in two forms:

1) Mebeverine hydrochloride 135mg tablets with a film coating 2) Mebeverine 200mg capsules with modified release

The difference is that modified-release capsules slowly release the active ingredient over an extended period, rather than all at once. This means the effects last all day with fewer tablets needed.

What should I do if I make a mistake when taking Mebeverine?

If you accidentally take more than the advised dose, get in touch with your doctor or go to A&E straight away.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. But if it's nearly time for your next dose, just skip the one you missed and carry on with your regular schedule. Avoid taking two doses at once to make up for the missed one.

How long does it take for Mebeverine to work?

Mebeverine is quickly absorbed once you take it and begins to work within an hour. You should start to feel an improvement within 1 to 3 hours.

How effective is Mebeverine for IBS?

A review of 22 studies looked into whether mebeverine is a good treatment for IBS. It found that mebeverine was about 25% more effective than a placebo in relieving various IBS symptoms. These studies involved a total of 2,000 patients, all showing IBS symptoms. Some patients were given mebeverine for different lengths of time, while others received a placebo. Here are some of the main findings from the studies:

Does Mebeverine cause constipation?

Mebeverine is intended for short-term use by those with IBS. While it generally has few side effects, if you experience constipation or have a sluggish gut, it's important to speak with your doctor before using it, as it might make these issues worse.

If you're looking to treat

it's best to use a laxative such as Fybogel or Senna.

How does Mebeverine compare with other treatments for IBS?

Mebeverine is the generic form of Colofac. Both have the same ingredients in the same concentration. The choice is yours, as both are effective for managing IBS symptoms.

Similar treatments to Mebeverine include Fybogel Mebeverine. This product also contains mebeverine hydrochloride, along with ispaghula husk. These ingredients work together to help stop spasms and manage bowel movements.

Buscopan is a well-known option for treating IBS. It contains hyoscine butylbromide, which functions in a similar way to mebeverine. It helps to stop spasms, easing abdominal pain and discomfort.

If you're breastfeeding, you shouldn't take Mebeverine. Speak to your clinician about a safer option instead.

Is Mebeverine available over the counter?
