Metoclopramide Description
Metoclopramide is used to treat nausea by blocking certain signals in the brain.
It's a generic form of Maxolon and can help ease the feeling of nausea.
The typical dose is a 10mg tablet, which you can take up to three times a day.

What is Metoclopramide?

Metoclopramide is a medicine used to treat nausea. It can ease your symptoms by preventing you from feeling or being sick.

It's a generic form of the branded Maxolon. This means they both have the same active ingredient and work in a similar way, but Metoclopramide is typically more affordable.

Metoclopramide is meant to be taken for a short period, with a maximum duration of five days.

How does Metoclopramide work?

Nausea is the sensation that you might be sick, and it can sometimes lead to vomiting. This often happens when nerves in your body become irritated and send signals to a part of your brain known as the CTZ (chemoreceptor trigger zone). The CTZ then communicates with the vomiting centre using dopamine.

The vomiting centre can lead to gut spasms and feelings of nausea. Metoclopramide helps by blocking the signals between the CTZ and the vomiting centre. This should lessen nausea and decrease the chance of vomiting.

Which dose of Metoclopramide should I use?

The usual dose of Metoclopramide is 10mg, which you can take up to three times daily. If this doesn't sufficiently ease your nausea, our clinician may suggest increasing the dose to as much as 30mg.

If you have liver or kidney problems, or if you weigh under 60kg, the usual dose of Metoclopramide might be too much for you. You'll need to discuss a lower dose with our clinician.

How long does it take Metoclopramide to work?

You'll typically begin to feel better within 30 minutes to an hour after taking Metoclopramide.

How long can I take Metoclopramide for?

Metoclopramide is typically prescribed for a maximum of five days, though this can change based on the reason you're taking it.

If you're using it for migraines, only take it when your symptoms start. If it's for nausea from chemotherapy or surgery, continue taking it for the duration your doctor has advised.

If you think you need more treatment for nausea after completing your course, or if you're unsure about the dosage, it's best to speak with our clinician. Simply log into your account and send them a message.

What should I do if I make a mistake when taking Metoclopramide?

If you've taken more Metoclopramide than recommended, get in touch with a healthcare professional or visit your nearest hospital. If you can, bring the medication packaging with you.

If you forget to take a dose, don't take two doses to catch up. Simply skip the missed dose and carry on with your treatment as usual.
