What is Mometasone?

Mometasone is a steroid cream that reduces inflammation, redness, and itching. It's applied to the skin to treat various conditions, such as different types of eczema, including atopic, dyshidrotic, and discoid eczema. When used as a nasal spray, it can relieve congestion caused by hay fever and sinusitis.

Atopic eczema is the most common form of eczema, causing symptoms such as swelling, redness, and itching. It can sometimes lead to other types, like discoid eczema, also known as neurodermatitis. Discoid eczema is identified by red or purple coin-shaped patches on the skin, which can also become scaly and itchy. Fortunately, it is usually treatable with topical steroids. Mometasone cream and ointment leaflets state they are for atopic dermatitis and psoriasis, so using them for other dermatitis types is considered off-label. However, rest assured, your clinician will only prescribe it if they believe it is safe and the benefits outweigh any risks for your particular situation.

Dyshidrotic eczema is another form of eczema that affects the hands and feet. It begins with intense itching, leading to burning sensations and rashes. As it progresses, blisters may form, which can lead to infections. Treatment usually involves topical steroids, but if an infection occurs, you might also need antibiotics.

How does Mometasone work?

Mometasone furoate is a topical steroid that helps to reduce inflammation and itching. It works by decreasing swelling, blisters, and itchiness. While the exact mechanism isn't fully understood, it's believed to interact with the nucleus of certain cells, altering their genes. This leads to the production of anti-inflammatory molecules and a reduction in inflammatory ones, which helps to ease swelling and itching.

What are the different forms of Mometasone?

Mometasone comes in various forms and can be used to treat different conditions. As a topical treatment, it is available as either a cream or an ointment. Although people sometimes use these terms interchangeably, there are differences. Ointments are thicker and have a higher oil content than creams. This makes them better at repairing the skin barrier and treating dry skin.

There's also a nasal spray with mometasone. It's used for conditions such as hay fever and sinusitis to help clear the airways and reduce swelling. Additionally, it's available as an inhaler to help prevent asthma attacks.

Can I stop using mometasone anytime?

No, you shouldn't suddenly stop using mometasone if you've been using it for a long time. Doing so can lead to withdrawal symptoms such as redness and stinging. Instead, reach out to your clinician online, and they will guide you on how to gradually stop using it.

What should I do if I make a mistake when taking Mometasone?

If you happen to forget to apply the cream, just use it as soon as you remember. Avoid applying it twice in one day or using a double amount to make up for the missed application.

If you accidentally swallow a bit of ointment, it usually won't cause any side effects. However, if you're worried, do get in touch with your doctor or pharmacist for advice. Using too much can be harmful, so avoid applying it for a long time.

How effective is Mometasone for eczema?

A study involving 175 patients with eczema looked at the effectiveness of two steroid creams, mometasone and methylprednisolone aceponate (MA), over a two-week period. The findings revealed that mometasone was more effective, with 74.8% of patients experiencing improvement compared to 47.8% with MA. Mometasone also helped to reduce water loss from the skin, aiding in moisture retention and hydration. Additionally, it significantly eased itching.

In summary, the study found that mometasone is the more effective treatment for eczema.

How does Mometasone differ from other treatments for eczema?

Most eczema treatments use a topical steroid such as mometasone or clobetasol (Dermovate). These help reduce inflammation and itching. Your clinician can assist you in choosing the best option based on your health requirements.

Your clinician might also suggest emollients such as Dermol and Fifty:50. These products help to moisturise your skin and repair its barrier function.

If you have dyshidrotic eczema, there's a chance you could develop an infection. If that happens, you might be prescribed a topical antibiotic such as Fucidin H. This medication has two active ingredients: a steroid and an antibiotic, which work together to combat infections and reduce inflammation.

Is Mometasone similar to any other treatment?

Yes, Mometasone furoate is the generic form of Elocon. They both have the same active ingredient in the same strength. The main differences are in the packaging and the cost. You can choose either the branded or generic version, but usually, the generic is less expensive.

Is Mometasone available over the counter?

No, Mometasone is only available with a prescription. This ensures your clinician can confirm it's safe and appropriate for you.
