Montelukast Description
Montelukast is used to help stop asthma symptoms such as wheezing and coughing.
It works by stopping leukotrienes, which lead to inflammation.
You should take a 10mg tablet once a day, preferably in the evening.

What is Montelukast?

Montelukast is a generic medicine available under the brand name Singulair. Although it's made by various manufacturers, the active ingredient remains the same – Montelukast sodium.

Montelukast is often prescribed as part of your asthma treatment, alongside your inhalers or other medications. It's a preventative medicine that you take once a day, and it helps manage symptoms like exercise-induced asthma, wheezing, coughing, and chest tightness.

How does Montelukast work?

When allergens trigger our immune system, it releases molecules known as leukotrienes. These molecules lead to swelling and tightening of the airways and boost mucus production. This can result in issues such as allergies and asthma.

Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist, which means it stops the receptors in your lungs from responding to leukotrienes. This can not only help improve your asthma symptoms, but it can also ease bothersome symptoms if you suffer from allergies like hay fever.

What doses of Montelukast are there?

Montelukast film-coated tablets come only in a 10mg dose. If the medication isn't effective for you, we can suggest a different treatment option, as we can't change the Montelukast dosage we provide.

How long does it take Montelukast to work?

Montelukast begins to work right away once you start taking it, and it reaches its highest levels in your body after about three hours. The leukotriene levels impacting your lungs will start to decrease immediately, but it might take up to a week for you to experience the full benefits of this medication.

What should I do if I make a mistake when taking Montelukast?

It's quite normal to forget to take your medication, so there's no need to worry if you notice you've missed a dose and it's too late to take it. Simply skip the missed dose and carry on with your usual schedule the next day. If you find yourself forgetting regularly, try setting an alarm at the same time each day as a reminder.

If you've accidentally taken one or two extra Montelukast tablets, there's no need to worry too much. It's quite hard to overdose on Montelukast, so taking an extra dose or two usually won't cause any harm. However, if you start feeling unwell after taking too many, it's important to get emergency medical help straight away.

How is Montelukast different from other treatments for asthma?

Montelukast is an additional treatment and shouldn't be used by itself. It will be prescribed if you're already receiving treatment for your asthma but aren't happy with the results.

If Montelukast isn't working as well as you'd hoped, you might need to consult a specialist about other options like theophylline or steroid tablets. However, steroid tablets can cause some unpleasant side effects that require careful monitoring, so it's usually best to try Montelukast first.

Is Montelukast similar to any other treatments?

Montelukast is the generic form of the branded medication Singulair. Both the generic and branded versions have the same ingredients and work the same way in your body. However, they might look different, and their packaging can vary. The generic version is typically less expensive than the branded one.

Who is Montelukast for?

Montelukast is generally suitable for most people with asthma. However, it should only be considered if your regular asthma treatment isn't working well enough and your symptoms are hardly improving.

Our clinical team can help determine if Montelukast is suitable for you, considering your medical history.

Do I need a prescription for Montelukast?

Montelukast can only be obtained with a prescription, so our clinician will need to have a chat with you to review your medical history and determine if it's a suitable treatment for you. We'll also need to keep an eye on how you're doing with the medication to ensure you're benefiting from it fully.

Feel free to get in touch with us, and we can begin your Montelukast treatment promptly, if it's suitable for you.
