Montelukast Description
Montelukast works by blocking leukotriene, a molecule that causes inflammation and itching. This helps to manage symptoms of severe eczema.
To order Montelukast, just answer a few questions about your health. We'll suggest a list of treatments that might suit you. Once you've made your choice, we'll deliver it to you the next working day.

What is Montelukast?

Montelukast is a medication for asthma that can also be used, in some cases, to manage severe eczema symptoms. It works by reducing inflammation, which helps to relieve symptoms such as bumps and itching.

While steroids are usually the go-to treatment for severe eczema, Montelukast can also assist in managing the symptoms. It's often advised to use it alongside steroids, as it can help reduce discomfort like itching and redness.

How does Montelukast work?

Eczema symptoms can be triggered by histamine, a chemical involved in your body's allergic reactions. However, leukotriene, another molecule, can also contribute. Similar to histamine, leukotriene is a pro-inflammatory molecule released when you encounter an allergen, leading to swelling and itching.

Montelukast is a leukotriene inhibitor. It works by attaching to leukotriene receptors, which helps to reduce inflammation, easing swelling and itching.

It's important to remember that many factors can trigger eczema symptoms, so taking leukotriene might not be effective for everyone.

What doses of Montelukast are there?

Montelukast comes in 10mg tablets, 4mg and 5mg chewable tablets, or 4mg granules. The regular tablets are usually for adults and children over 15, while the chewable ones are generally given to those under 15.

How long does Montelukast take to work?

When you take Montelukast by mouth, it's absorbed quickly and can start reducing the effect of leukotriene right away. However, it might take a week or two to ease severe eczema symptoms. If you don't notice any improvement after 4 to 8 weeks, get in touch with your clinician online.

What should I do if I accidentally take Montelukast incorrectly?

If you accidentally take more than you should, get in touch with your doctor for advice. Although no side effects have been reported from overdosing, it's still important to seek medical guidance.

If you forget to take a dose, just take your next one at the usual time. Avoid taking two doses to make up for the one you missed.

What class of drugs is Montelukast in?

Montelukast is a leukotriene antagonist, meaning it works by blocking leukotrienes from attaching to their receptors. While it does affect the immune pathway, it isn't classified as an immunosuppressant. People sometimes mix it up with antihistamines because both help with allergy symptoms. However, antihistamines block histamine, whereas Montelukast focuses on leukotrienes.

What are the side effects of Montelukast?

As with any medication, Montelukast may cause side effects in some individuals. The most frequently reported side effects are stomach pain and headaches. In clinical trials, most patients experienced these side effects as mild. However, if you find the discomfort severe, please get in touch with your doctor.

There are a few things you can try to relieve side effects if you experience them. For a headache, drink extra water and steer clear of alcohol. If you have a stomach ache, using a heating pad or hot water bottle can help soothe the discomfort.

Can I use Montelukast if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?

Yes, you can take Montelukast during pregnancy, but be sure to consult your doctor or midwife first.

Montelukast can pass into breast milk in small amounts, but there's no evidence at the moment suggesting it's harmful to your baby. However, to be cautious, it's best to inform your doctor or midwife if you plan to take it.

Is Montelukast available prescription-free?

No, Montelukast can only be obtained with a prescription. This ensures that your healthcare professionals can confirm the treatment is safe and appropriate for you.
