Naratriptan Description
Naratriptan is a tablet that can help ease migraine symptoms when they occur.
It narrows the expanded blood vessels in your brain, which are believed to trigger migraine symptoms.
It may take a bit more time to start working compared to some other migraine treatments, but it lasts longer to help stop symptoms from coming back.

What is Naratriptan?

Naratriptan is a generic tablet used to treat migraines. It belongs to a group of medicines known as 'triptans', which are designed to tackle migraine headaches, whether or not you have an aura. Triptans like Naratriptan help relieve symptoms rather than prevent them. This means Naratriptan won't stop migraines from occurring or reduce how often you get them. You should take it when you begin to notice migraine symptoms, and it will help ease those symptoms so you can carry on with your day.

Migraine headaches are a particular kind of headache. Some people experience warning signs, known as an aura, before a migraine begins, while others may find they start without any warning. Common symptoms include a throbbing pain on one side of the head, along with heightened sensitivity to light and sound. The exact cause of migraines isn't completely understood, but they are often believed to be triggered by factors like fatigue, stress, or certain foods and drinks.

How does Naratriptan work?

When a migraine starts, it causes temporary changes in your brain, such as the widening of blood vessels. This leads to more pain and nausea signals being sent to your brain, resulting in migraine symptoms.

Naratriptan is a serotonin agonist, which means it attaches to the serotonin receptors in your brain. This action causes the widened blood vessels to narrow again, helping to lessen pain signals. As a result, it can alleviate both your pain and nausea symptoms.

What doses of Naratriptan are there?

Naratriptan comes in just one dose, and you should take no more than one tablet every four hours, and only one tablet for the same migraine. If Naratriptan isn't easing your symptoms as expected, it's a good idea to talk to our clinician. You might need to consider a different treatment option.

How long does it take Naratriptan to work?

Naratriptan is absorbed quickly, and you should start to feel better within two hours of taking it. If your symptoms haven't improved after four hours, don't take another dose – get in touch with our clinician for guidance. Although Naratriptan may take a bit longer to start working compared to some other triptans, it remains in your system for a longer period. While other triptans, like sumatriptan, last about three hours, Naratriptan can relieve your symptoms for up to six hours, reducing the likelihood that you'll need another tablet if your migraine returns.

What should I do if I make a mistake when taking Naratriptan?

If you take more Naratriptan than recommended, get medical help straight away. Since Naratriptan isn't taken on a regular schedule, you don't need to worry if you miss a dose.

How is Naratriptan different from other migraine treatments?

Migraine treatments usually include triptans, painkillers, or anti-sickness medications known as antiemetics. Some treatments combine a painkiller with an antiemetic. Depending on your health needs, you might find that certain treatments work better for you. If you prefer not to take tablets, there are also options available as powder sachets or nasal sprays.

There are differences among triptans too. Some act faster to relieve your symptoms, while others last longer in your system, which might be better if your migraines tend to come back often. If you're unsure which migraine treatment is right for you, have a chat with us about your health. Our expert clinicians can guide you based on your specific needs.
