Oestrogel Description
Oestrogel is a gel used in hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to help relieve menopause symptoms.
It includes a man-made form of oestrogen to boost decreasing levels.
Apply the gel directly to your skin every day.

What is Oestrogel prescribed to treat?

Oestrogel is used to relieve menopause symptoms. Menopause is a natural phase that every woman experiences at some point. During this time, hormone levels shift, resulting in the end of menstrual periods and the ability to conceive.

Menopause typically begins between the ages of 45 and 55 and can continue for several years. Some women may experience premature menopause, which is uncommon but can happen to women in their 20s. About one in 100 women may notice symptoms before reaching 40.

Menopause symptoms can include hot flushes, trouble sleeping, vaginal dryness, anxiety, feeling mentally foggy, and a reduced sex drive. Oestrogel contains oestrogen, which helps balance hormone levels and alleviate these symptoms.

Oestrogel HRT – a different way of managing your symptoms

Oestrogel is a very effective option for managing menopausal symptoms. Unlike many other menopause treatments, Oestrogel is a gel that you apply to your skin, instead of using a patch or taking a tablet.

So, all you need to do is remember to apply it to your skin at regular times. This is especially helpful if you find swallowing tablets difficult.

How does oestrogen work during menopause?

The active ingredient in Oestrogel is a synthetic form of oestrogen, a naturally occurring hormone. So what does oestrogen do to help manage the symptoms of the menopause? During the menopause, oestrogen levels slowly start to fall, leading to the symptoms described above. By replacing these hormones, Oestrogel helps to relieve menopausal symptoms.

If you've had a hysterectomy, you can use oestrogel by itself. However, if you still have your womb, you'll need to add progesterone. This can come from a Mirena coil (or something similar) if you have one, or you can take it as a gel or tablet for a few days each month.

If you haven't had a hysterectomy, combined HRT might be more suitable for you.

What should I do if I forget to use Oestrogel gel?

If you forget to apply Oestrogel and it's been less than 12 hours since your usual time, use it as soon as you remember. If it's been more than 12 hours, just skip that dose and continue with your regular schedule. Don't double up on doses to make up for the one you missed, as this won't help and could increase the risk of side effects.

Are there different Oestrogel doses?

Oestrogel 0.06% is the usual strength, but you can increase it by using more than the standard two pumps once a day. When you first start treatment, you'll probably begin with the lowest dose. If it doesn't seem to be effective, our clinician can adjust the dose for you. It's important not to change your treatment on your own without discussing it with our clinician first.

Are there different forms of HRT?

Certainly. HRT is available in various forms. There are combination therapies that include more than one hormone, and single hormone options like Oestrogel. Additionally, there are continuous treatments typically given to women who still have their periods, and sequential therapies for those who are postmenopausal.

As you can see, there are several treatments available for different stages of menopause and tailored to your personal needs. Our clinician can guide you through these options to help find the right type and dose of therapy for you.

Oestrogel and Utrogestan: why are they used together?

If you haven't had a hysterectomy, you'll need to take a progesterone hormone to make sure your cancer risk doesn't increase. Utrogestan is one of the most commonly prescribed progesterone treatments, but it's not the only option that can be used with Oestrogel.

After our clinician learns more about your health, they can recommend the treatments or combination of treatments that will suit you best.

Can I get the Oestrogel Pump Pack over the counter?

Hormone replacement therapies require a prescription, so you won't be able to buy them over the counter. At the beginning of your treatment, our clinician will need to keep an eye on how you're doing to ensure they're effective for you. They can also provide advice on any side effects you might encounter.

With so many types of HRT available, along with different dosages and forms, it's really important to get advice from our clinician to find out which one is best for you.

Is oestrogen safe for me to take?

You should only take oestrogen by itself if you've had a hysterectomy, as it can raise the risk of womb cancer.

A hysterectomy is a procedure where the womb is completely removed.

Because of this, if you haven't had a hysterectomy, you'll be given a different treatment that includes two hormones. These are called combined treatments.

Alternatively, you can use a separate progestogen with Oestrogel. Both oestrogen and progestogen are also present in the combined contraceptive pill.
