Oxytetracycline Description
Oxytetracycline is an antibiotic used to treat acne.
It works by eliminating harmful bacteria to treat infected skin.
You typically take it once or twice daily for up to three months.

What is Oxytetracycline?

Oxytetracycline is a widely used antibiotic that treats various infections. It's commonly prescribed for skin conditions such as acne and rosacea.

Acne is a skin condition that can occur due to hormonal changes or when a lot of bacteria block your pores. Rosacea, on the other hand, is a long-term skin condition that comes and goes in cycles. If you have rosacea, you might notice times when the skin on your face, especially your cheeks, turns red and flushed. The exact cause of rosacea is unknown.

Oxytetracycline is used to treat acne caused by bacteria. It works by killing the bacteria, preventing them from producing a protein they need to survive. This medication is available in tablet form and is usually taken once daily for up to three months.

We don't know much about rosacea, but research has shown that tetracycline antibiotics, such as Oxytetracycline, are effective in treating it when it occurs alongside acne.

How does Oxytetracycline work?

Acne is mainly caused by two factors: hormonal imbalances, which is why it's common in teenagers experiencing puberty and in pregnant women, and bacteria. People with a type of rosacea known as acne rosacea often develop spots along with the usual flushing and redness on the face.

Your skin's pores produce a substance called sebum, which helps keep your hair and skin healthy. However, if your glands produce too much sebum, it can block your pores and attract a lot of bacteria. While this bacteria is generally harmless, an excess can lead to spots.

Oxytetracycline helps by slowing down the growth of bacteria. It achieves this by preventing the bacteria from producing the essential proteins they need to live. This weakens the bacteria, allowing your body's immune system to eliminate them.

What doses of Oxytetracycline are there?

Oxytetracycline is only available in a 250mg dose. If your acne is more severe, your prescriber might suggest taking a higher dose of 500mg. This simply means you'll take two 250mg tablets each day instead of one.

How long does it take Oxytetracycline to work?

Oxytetracycline is absorbed quickly and begins to work in your body right away. However, like most antibiotics used for acne and rosacea, such as Oxytetracycline, it may take a few weeks before you see any improvement in your skin. If there's no noticeable change after three months, our clinician might recommend trying a different treatment.

What should I do if I make a mistake when using Oxytetracycline?

Always follow your prescriber's instructions when taking your medication. If you happen to miss a dose, don't take two tablets at once. Simply take your next tablet when it's due and ensure you don't go over the daily recommended dose. Using alarms or a reminder app can be helpful to keep on track with taking Oxytetracycline.

One of the key things to keep in mind when taking antibiotics is to complete the entire course. Even if you start feeling better halfway through, it's important to finish all your medication.

How is Oxytetracycline different to other treatments for acne?

Oxytetracycline is an antibiotic tablet, which sets it apart from some other acne treatments. Its primary function is to attack and eliminate bacteria, making it particularly effective for skin infections. It's usually more successful than over-the-counter options for treating bacterial acne and rosacea.

Some antibiotic treatments for acne and rosacea are available as creams. Depending on your preferences, this might not be the ideal choice, particularly if you have other skin conditions like eczema. In more severe cases, you might be prescribed Oxytetracycline along with another type of cream.

Is Oxytetracycline similar to any other treatments?

Oxytetracycline belongs to a group of antibiotics known as tetracyclines. These are called 'broad-spectrum' antibiotics because they can be used for a variety of purposes. They generally work by targeting and killing bacteria, which is helpful in treating acne.

Other tetracycline antibiotics that can be used for acne and rosacea are lymecycline, erythromycin, and doxycycline. People can respond differently to medications. If Oxytetracycline isn't improving your skin as much as you'd like, you might consider trying another antibiotic.

Who is Oxytetracycline for?

Oxytetracycline is often given alongside a topical treatment for those with more severe acne or conditions like rosacea. For women, the contraceptive pill can sometimes be effective for treating acne. However, since this isn't suitable for men and is more effective for hormonal acne rather than bacterial, an antibiotic like Oxytetracycline might be a better choice in certain situations.

You'll need a prescription for most antibiotics, including Oxytetracycline. This ensures the treatment is safe and suitable for you.
