Premarin Description
Premarin is an HRT tablet that helps relieve menopause symptoms.
It has a man-made form of oestrogen to help boost low levels.
The tablets are available in three different doses. Typically, you begin with the lowest strength.

What is Premarin?

Premarin is a hormone replacement therapy containing oestrogen, used to relieve menopause symptoms like hot flushes and night sweats. These are common issues women face when their hormone levels begin to decrease.

By adding oestrogen, a hormone your body naturally produces but decreases during menopause, Premarin helps ease these symptoms so you can continue your daily activities comfortably. It can also be used to help prevent osteoporosis, a condition some women may develop after menopause.

How does Premarin work?

Menopause occurs when you haven't had a period for 12 months in a row. Before this stage, during what's called the perimenopause, your body's oestrogen levels decrease significantly. The effects of this hormonal drop differ for each person, but many women going through menopause often feel both physically and mentally unwell.

Menopause is a natural stage in life that all women experience as they age. For many, menopausal symptoms are unfamiliar until these hormonal changes begin. These symptoms, often called vasomotor symptoms, can include uncomfortable physical sensations like hot flushes, night sweats, and even mental confusion, which can be quite unsettling and challenging to manage.

Premarin helps by increasing the oestrogen levels in your body, which in turn eases the discomfort of these symptoms.

Who is Premarin for?

Premarin is intended for women who are dealing with hot flushes and sweating due to menopause. It's often prescribed for those who have had a hysterectomy. If you're experiencing other symptoms that you believe are linked to the end of your menstrual cycle, our clinicians can help determine if this is the most suitable HRT treatment for you.

If you're under 45 and unsure whether your symptoms are related to the start of menopause, your GP might suggest a blood test. Otherwise, you can start taking Premarin whenever you're ready.

As Premarin is an oestrogen-only treatment, it's particularly advised for women who have undergone a hysterectomy, which is surgery to remove part or all of the womb.

If you still have your uterus (meaning you haven't had a hysterectomy), you're usually advised to take combined HRT. However, if you take Premarin in this situation, you'll also be given a progestogen to ensure your hormones stay balanced.

Which dose of Premarin will work best for me?

It's best to begin with the lowest dose that manages your symptoms effectively. The 0.3mg dose of Premarin should help with your hot flushes and night sweats. However, if it doesn't seem to be enough, have a chat with one of our clinicians about adjusting the dose.

Premarin is available in 0.625mg and 1.25mg doses as well. If the 0.3mg dose isn't effectively managing your symptoms, your dose might be increased to one of these higher amounts.

How long will I need to use Premarin for?

Menopausal symptoms can vary from woman to woman, so the time it takes for Premarin to be effective will differ for each person. Some women may notice an improvement in their symptoms in under four weeks, while for others, it might take a bit longer.

We recommend using the smallest dose that is effective for you, and only for as long as you feel it's necessary. While the risks are minimal, using hormone replacement therapy for more than ten years has been linked to a higher risk of breast cancer. Therefore, it's best to use HRT only for as long as you need it.

Will I need another treatment alongside Premarin?

Premarin is often given to women who have had a hysterectomy. This is because taking oestrogen-only hormone replacement therapy can lead to the thickening of the womb lining, which may raise the risk of cancer.

If you haven't had a hysterectomy, you might be given a separate progestogen tablet or a combined HRT. The type of HRT recommended for you will depend on your stage of menopause. For instance, sequential HRT like Elleste Duet is for women who are still having periods. Indivina is a continuous HRT that combines oestrogen and progesterone in one tablet, suitable for women who haven't had a period for at least three years.

Are there any risks associated with Premarin?

Hormone replacement therapy does come with some risks, but the benefits often outweigh them.

Your age, weight, and any existing health conditions can all play a role in how you might experience issues when using HRT medications like Premarin. Ultimately, it depends on your individual health.

Using combined HRT slightly increases the risk of breast cancer. On the other hand, oestrogen-only pills carry little to no risk. Some links have been found between hormone treatment and cardiovascular diseases, but for women under 60, the chances of having a stroke or heart attack are still low.

Will I experience side effects when taking Premarin?

Almost all medications can lead to side effects, and HRT tablets are no exception. However, the positive news is that not everyone experiences them. They are typically short-lived and should get better as you continue with your treatment.

Some women taking Premarin have reported breast pain or tenderness. Nausea, stomach pain, and mood changes are also known as potential reactions while your body adjusts to it. However, you might not experience any of these side effects.

If you're worried about how you're reacting to Premarin, or if you think you're experiencing an unusual reaction, it's important to get medical help.

Do I need a prescription for Premarin?

To start your hormone replacement therapy with Premarin, you'll need a prescription. Our clinicians can help determine the right starting dose for you, and we'll follow up once you've begun your treatment to ensure it's working well for you.

Can Premarin help with osteoporosis?

As women approach menopause, bone loss can speed up. This increase can raise the risk of some women developing osteoporosis and experiencing fractures or breaks in their bones as they get older.

HRT treatments such as Premarin increase your oestrogen levels and can help prevent bone issues. Talk to our clinicians for the best advice on starting HRT to manage both menopause and osteoporosis symptoms.
