Protopic Description
Protopic is a cream used on the skin to treat inflammation, such as perioral dermatitis.
It blocks calcineurin, a protein that triggers your body's inflammatory cells, helping to reduce inflammation.
Apply it twice daily until the affected area improves, then switch to twice a week to maintain your condition.

What is Protopic?

Protopic ointment includes tacrolimus, which helps to lessen inflammation and itching. It's used to treat different types of dermatitis (skin irritation) when the condition is believed to be caused by an immune response.

Perioral dermatitis appears as a red rash around the mouth, often accompanied by itchiness and spots. The exact cause isn't completely known, but some believe that inflammation of the hair follicles might lead to spots forming around the mouth. Although topical steroids are commonly used to treat this condition, overuse can cause dermatitis when you stop using them. Other possible causes include hormonal changes, taking oral contraceptives, and fungal infections.

How does Protopic work?

Protopic contains tacrolimus, which is an immunomodulating agent that influences your immune system. When you apply it to your skin, it blocks calcineurin, which helps reduce inflammatory substances like mast cells, cytokines IL-2, and TNF-alpha. Consequently,

How is Protopic different from other treatments for perioral dermatitis?

Protopic is a type of immunosuppressant. It works by dampening the immune response, which helps to lessen inflammation and itching. Elidel is a similar medication to Protopic. It contains pimecrolimus, which also helps to reduce inflammation and is used to treat dermatitis.

If the affected area is severely infected, your doctor might prescribe antibiotics such as Lymecycline for a few weeks. This helps stop the bacteria causing the infection, which can ease itching and also reduce inflammation and spots.

How well does Protopic work for perioral dermatitis?

Tacrolimus has been shown to effectively treat dermatitis. A study from 2000 revealed that patients using 0.1% tacrolimus twice a day experienced noticeable improvements within a week (54%), with even better results after 6 months (81%) and a year (86%).

Moreover, when comparing tacrolimus to topical corticosteroids for treating atopic dermatitis, 71.6% of patients using tacrolimus showed more improvement within 3 months, compared to 50.8% of those using a steroid.
