Pulmicort Description
Pulmicort is a preventer inhaler used to manage asthma.
It's a steroid medication that helps reduce inflammation in the airways of the lungs.
It's a Turbohaler device that's activated by your breath, which makes it easier to use.

What is Pulmicort?

Pulmicort is a type of inhaler known as a 'turbohaler'. It helps lower the chance of experiencing asthma symptoms and prevents asthma attacks.

Asthma is a widespread long-term condition that affects the lungs. It can make breathing difficult and lead to coughing, wheezing, a tight feeling in the chest, and shortness of breath. This happens because your airways become narrower and swollen, affecting airflow to your lungs. Additionally, extra mucus may be produced, further narrowing the airways. While some people have only mild symptoms, others can face severe and potentially life-threatening issues. Symptoms might appear unexpectedly or when you're exposed to certain triggers like allergies, exercise, infections, pollution, smoke, and cold air.

Asthma can't be cured, but there are effective treatments for managing the symptoms. In children, asthma may sometimes get better, but it can come back in adulthood. With the right treatment, you can live a normal life and go about your daily activities without major issues.

Pulmicort helps manage and prevent asthma symptoms. Unlike traditional inhalers, you don't need to press a button to use it. As a 'preventer' medication, it's important to use it daily, rather than just when you need it.

In clinical trials, budesonide, which is the active ingredient in Pulmicort, has been found to enhance lung function just a few hours after a single dose. However, it may take up to four weeks of regular use to achieve its full benefit.

How does Pulmicort work?

Pulmicort contains budesonide as its active ingredient. This is a type of corticosteroid medicine often used to treat asthma. It works by blocking chemicals released by the immune system when you're affected by an asthma trigger. This helps to reduce inflammation and risk. It also stops mucus from forming.

Asthma impacts over 300 million people globally. In children, boys are more often affected, but in adults, it's more prevalent among women. It can run in families, especially if there's a history of allergies or smoking.

You can use Pulmicort once or twice a day, inhaling one or two puffs each time. It's a maintenance treatment, meaning it helps manage symptoms when used regularly over time. It won't be effective during a sudden asthma attack, so you'll need a different rescue treatment for those situations.

What doses of Pulmicort are there?

Pulmicort comes in three different strengths: 100mcg, 200mcg, and 400mcg. The dose you need will depend on how severe your condition is and your symptoms. Our clinician will recommend the right dose for you. It's important to stick to the dosage you've been prescribed.

Patients often notice that asthma can vary over time, so treatment might need to be modified.

How long does it take Pulmicort to work?

How quickly Pulmicort starts working can vary based on your individual situation, condition, and dosage. Generally, it should begin to help prevent symptoms within the first 24 hours. However, it might take four to six weeks for inflammation to decrease and for you to feel the full benefits. It's important to use the treatment regularly to effectively manage your symptoms. You may still have asthma attacks, but they should happen less often.

What should I do if I make a mistake when using Pulmicort?

It's crucial to stick to the instructions from your clinician. If you forget to take Pulmicort, you can take it as soon as you remember, unless it's almost time for your next dose. If that's the case, just skip the missed dose.

You may not feel the medication entering your lungs when you use the inhaler, but it generally does. So, be sure not to take another dose, even if you think it hasn't reached your lungs.

If you've taken more than you should but aren't noticing any unusual side effects, you probably won't need to see a doctor. The primary effect is that it dampens the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) function, which is your body's stress response system. However, if you start feeling unwell, it's important to get medical help.

Do I need a prescription for Pulmicort?

You'll need a prescription to buy Pulmicort. It's crucial for our clinician to review your medical history to ensure Pulmicort is safe for you to use.

Which dose of Pulmicort should I use?

The amount of medicine you need will depend on how serious your condition is. Sometimes, our clinician might suggest beginning with a smaller dose to observe how it affects you. If you don't notice any improvement, they may increase the dose.

If you're already on a higher dose of 200mcg and it's been working for you, you'll probably need to continue with it and have your condition checked regularly. It's crucial to speak with a clinician who can guide you on the most suitable dose for your needs.

Is Pulmicort similar to any other treatments?

There are other generic treatments available that also contain Budesonide as the active ingredient. They function in a similar manner to help manage and prevent asthma symptoms. However, since they're produced by different manufacturers, the price and packaging might vary.

How is Pulmicort different from other treatments for asthma?

Pulmicort is an asthma medication that's taken regularly over time to help manage symptoms and prevent asthma attacks. Depending on your condition, you might also need another inhaler for sudden asthma attacks. Pulmicort comes as a turbohaler, which means you don't have to press a button to get your dose, making it a more convenient choice compared to some other treatments.
