Relvar Ellipta Description
Relvar Ellipta is a preventative inhaler that combines two active medicines.
It combines steroids and a bronchodilator to effectively manage asthma.
It offers relief from symptoms for 24 hours with just one dose a day.

What is Relvar Ellipta?

Relvar Ellipta is a combination inhaler that includes two medicines, offering effective relief from asthma symptoms. It's typically used once every 24 hours, so just one dose can help you breathe more easily throughout the day.

How do Relvar Ellipta inhalers work?

The active ingredients in Relvar Ellipta, fluticasone and vilanterol, work together to provide a strong anti-inflammatory effect.

Fluticasone is the steroid part of the medication. Don't worry, it won't help you lift more at the gym – these corticosteroids are designed to reduce swelling in the lungs. On the other hand, vilanterol is a long-acting adrenergic agonist (LABA). It helps by relaxing the smooth muscles in your airways. These muscles are involved in your lungs' ability to contract, so by relaxing them, LABAs help you breathe more easily.

Which dose of Relvar Ellipta shall I start on?

Relvar Ellipta comes in two strengths: 92/22mcg and 184/22mcg. Each inhaler provides 30 doses, roughly enough for a month's use.

The dose you begin with will be based on how severe your symptoms are. Asthma treatment is tailored to you, and you're the best person to assess how effective your corticosteroid inhaler is. Our clinicians are available to answer any questions you may have and will prescribe a starting dose they believe will suit you best.

No matter which strength of inhaler you begin with, it's generally a good idea to continue using it for a bit before considering any changes. Asthma medication takes time to build up in your system, so you might not feel immediate relief. However, this doesn't mean the inhaler isn't effective. If you think your dose needs adjusting, our team is here to assist you.

Is Relvar Ellipta a brown inhaler?

It can be a bit confusing that preventer inhalers have various names and often come in different colours. For many years, steroid inhalers, also called corticosteroids, were brown, so people started calling them ‘brown’ inhalers. Similarly, short-acting beta agonists, like Salbutamol, became known as ‘blue’ inhalers because of their colour.

However, this doesn't guarantee that your preventer inhaler will be brown. In the past, healthcare professionals have expressed worries about the possible confusion caused by the inhaler colour system. As a result, the mouthpiece cover for both strengths of Relvar Ellipta was changed from blue to yellow in the UK to help prevent people from mixing up their preventer and reliever inhalers.

In a way, your Relvar Ellipta acts like a 'brown' inhaler. However, it will be light grey with a yellow mouthpiece cover. You'll use it once a day to help prevent your asthma symptoms.

Can I get Relvar Ellipta over the counter?

No, steroid inhalers are only available with a prescription, so you'll need to consult a clinician before using a Relvar Ellipta inhaler. Since this medication combines corticosteroids with a LABA, it's important to ensure it's appropriate for you before starting treatment.

Is Relvar Ellipta considered a strong inhaler?

Relvar Ellipta is available in two different strengths. If you begin with the 92/22 mcg inhaler and find it doesn't control your asthma effectively, you can discuss with one of our clinicians about switching to the 184/22 mcg strength. The effectiveness of either inhaler in managing your asthma will depend on how you respond to the medication.

When you use Relvar Ellipta, you should notice your lung function improving within about 15 minutes after taking a dose.

Are there similar inhalers to Relvar Ellipta?

Symbicort and Seretide help reduce inflammation in the lungs similarly to Relvar Ellipta by combining a corticosteroid with a long-acting beta-agonist (LABA). Both Seretide and Flixotide use the same corticosteroid as Relvar Ellipta, which is Fluticasone. However, there is a slight difference in the type of fluticasone used in these inhalers. Relvar Ellipta contains fluticasone furoate, while Seretide and Flixotide contain fluticasone propionate. To give you an idea, 100mcg of fluticasone furoate is roughly equivalent to 500mcg of fluticasone propionate, meaning the inhalers cannot be swapped directly.

These inhalers are available in various doses and strengths. Our team can help recommend the one that best fits your needs.

Can I overuse my Relvar Ellipta?

Do I need another inhaler alongside my Relvar Ellipta?

When preventer inhalers such as Relvar Ellipta are working well, they greatly lower the chance of having an asthma attack.

There are still several asthma triggers that can be unpredictable. A study on asthma control found that patients with rhinitis (allergy symptoms in the nose) experienced more asthma attacks than those without it.

Things like pet hair, dust, and hay fever can all make asthma symptoms worse.

Having a 'blue' inhaler on hand can give you peace of mind if you experience an unexpected attack. Our team is here to guide you on starting a reliever like Ventolin or Airomir.

Why should I buy Relvar Ellipta with Treated?

After you've selected a COPD treatment, we'll stay in touch regularly to see how you're doing. Our clinicians are here to answer any questions you might have. If you decide to switch your inhaler or stop using it, we make that process easy as well.

We can bring your Relvar Ellipta inhaler straight to your doorstep. If you need to adjust, pause, or cancel your subscription, it’s simple to manage.
