Seroxat Description
Seroxat is sometimes used off-label to treat premature ejaculation (PE).
It boosts serotonin levels in the brain, which helps to delay ejaculation.
You might notice the first effects in about four weeks.

What is Seroxat?

Seroxat is a tablet classified as an SSRI. While it's primarily used as an antidepressant, it has also been clinically shown to effectively treat premature ejaculation. This condition occurs when men climax within 1-2 minutes of engaging in penetrative sex. It's a common issue that many men will experience at some point during their sexually active years.

Seroxat 20mg is approved for treating anxiety or depression. Although it has been shown to help with PE, it isn't officially approved for this use, so it's only prescribed for PE off-label. "Off-label" means using a medication for something other than its approved purposes. This might seem a bit worrying, but rest assured, you'll only receive off-label treatment if clinical studies have confirmed it's safe.

How does Seroxat work?

The active ingredients in Seroxat work to boost serotonin levels in the brain. Serotonin, often called the happy chemical, plays a role in lifting mood and easing depression symptoms. It's believed that low serotonin levels are a major factor in depression and other mental health problems. Seroxat helps restore your serotonin levels to a healthy balance, improving your mood.

Paroxetine works by preventing the reabsorption of serotonin in the brain, which helps to delay ejaculation. While it wasn't originally developed for this purpose, clinical trials have shown it effectively increases the time it takes to ejaculate during intercourse.

How long does Seroxat last for?

The amount and frequency of Seroxat you need to take will vary based on the condition it's prescribed for. In cases of premature ejaculation, clinical studies have found that ejaculatory control can improve within four weeks. These studies also noted an increase in IELT after taking Paroxetine on an "on-demand" basis for another four weeks. Your doctor or pharmacist will determine how long you should take it and the right dosage for you.

Research on Paroxetine for premature ejaculation suggests it's most effective when taken as a single dose a few hours before planned intercourse. Taking Paroxetine daily a few hours before sex has been shown to increase IELT.

How effective is Seroxat?

A study from 1999 tested how well Paroxetine worked for sixty-one men with PE. Out of these, fifty-three reported better control over ejaculation when they took Paroxetine as needed. On average, their IELT increased from 0-1 minute to 3.9 minutes. Additionally, thirty-six of those fifty-three said their IELT had impressively increased to 5.5 minutes. This study indicates that Paroxetine is an effective treatment for PE, which is why it continues to be prescribed off-label today.

Which strength of Seroxat should I take: 10mg, 20mg, or 30mg?

Taking higher doses of Seroxat can increase the likelihood of side effects. So, our clinical team will start you on 10mg of Seroxat. If your symptoms don't get better, please let us know so we can review your prescription. Your satisfaction with your medication is our main concern. If 10mg doesn't work for you, we can consider raising the dose to 20mg. The maximum dose we provide is 30mg, which is typically prescribed if there’s no improvement after consistently taking 20mg.

Does Seroxat cause weight loss?

One possible side effect of Seroxat is a reduced appetite. This might lead to initial weight loss if you're eating less than usual. However, once your appetite returns to normal, you might notice some weight gain.

If changes to your appetite and weight persist for a while, we suggest you send a message to our clinician. They can provide the help and advice you might need.

Can Seroxat cause withdrawal?

Three out of ten people report experiencing withdrawal symptoms when stopping Seroxat.

Symptoms can differ from person to person. It's crucial not to stop taking Seroxat all of a sudden. Instead, have a chat with a healthcare professional to work out a plan for gradually reducing your dose over time. Stopping Seroxat abruptly can raise the risk of withdrawal symptoms.

If you need help with Seroxat withdrawal, we suggest contacting our clinician or speaking with your local doctor. Whether symptoms are severe or mild, they are still important, and your health matters to us just as much as it does to you.

Do I need a prescription for Seroxat?

Yes, Seroxat is only available with a prescription and cannot be purchased over the counter. A healthcare professional needs to confirm that it's suitable for you before prescribing it. It's not just about ensuring Seroxat meets your needs; it's also about ensuring it's safe for you to use. Speak with one of our clinicians for expert advice on whether Seroxat is the right choice for you.
