Sildenafil is a prescribed treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED) that contains the active ingredient sildenafil citrate. This helps to relax the blood vessels in your penis. Erectile dysfunction occurs when blood flow to the penis is limited. It's estimated that about half of men aged 40 to 70 experience it to some degree. So, it's more common than you might realise, and if you're dealing with it, you're certainly not alone. Generally, it's not a major concern, but it can make achieving an erection challenging.
The issue is that blood vessels become constricted, preventing blood from flowing into your penis. This is due to an enzyme called PDE5. Sildenafil works against this enzyme, allowing blood to flow into the penis. The result? A firmer and longer-lasting erection.
There are a few misunderstandings about Sildenafil, such as it being an aphrodisiac or only suitable for older men. In truth, Sildenafil doesn't directly increase sexual desire. It helps by boosting blood flow, which makes it easier to get and keep an erection. Erectile dysfunction can affect men of any age, so if you suspect you have it, it's important to speak with a doctor to get a proper diagnosis before using Sildenafil.
Since Sildenafil tablets are generic, they're more affordable than Viagra. However, they contain the same active ingredient, so they should be just as effective.
Getting an erection involves relaxing the smooth muscles in the penis, which allows more blood to flow in and makes the penis hard. If you have erectile dysfunction, this process doesn't work properly. Instead of allowing smooth blood flow, the smooth muscles tighten, restricting it.
Sildenafil citrate, found in Sildenafil, is a type of medication known as a PDE5 inhibitor. This means it prevents the PDE5 enzyme from constricting the blood vessels in your penis. As a result, more blood can flow into your penis, helping you achieve a firmer and longer-lasting erection.
Although Sildenafil can address your physical needs, it won't assist with sexual arousal.
Sildenafil tablets are available in 25mg, 50mg, and 100mg doses, which are the same as those for Viagra.
If you're using it for the first time, you'll usually begin with Sildenafil 50mg. If this dose is effective but you experience mild side effects, our clinician might recommend reducing your dose to 25mg.
You might be advised to start with a 25mg dose if you have risk factors that make you more likely to experience side effects, such as diabetes or low blood pressure.
Sildenafil 100mg should only be used if you've already tried 50mg and found it wasn't effective enough. It's the highest dose available.
Before you start any medication, have a chat with your clinician to determine the correct dosage for you.
Clinical studies show that Sildenafil can start working in as little as 12 minutes, with the average time being about 30 minutes. This means that after taking your tablet, you should experience increased blood flow to your penis within 30 minutes, helping you to achieve an erection.
If you've taken Sildenafil tablets on an empty stomach and they're still not working for you, contact your clinician. They can recommend a different dose or another medication.
Like any medication, Sildenafil can have some side effects. The most frequent one is headaches, which occur in more than 1 in 10 people. Other common side effects are nausea, hot flushes, indigestion, changes in vision, a blocked nose, and dizziness.
To help with the side effects, try steering clear of spicy foods, use a fan to keep cool, and make sure to drink plenty of water. There are other side effects that might occur, but they're quite rare. For a complete list of side effects, have a look at the patient leaflet.
Sildenafil tablets can work in the body for about three to five hours.
If you take the tablet as directed, it should provide you with enough time to have sex with your partner. However, if you notice it doesn't last long enough, please inform our clinician. They can talk to you about possibly increasing your dose. They might also suggest another medication, such as Cialis, which can be effective for up to 36 hours.
For most men who use Sildenafil tablets, it works on the first or second try.
Clinical studies have reviewed the effectiveness of Sildenafil. It has been shown to help improve erections in:
If Sildenafil isn't working as well as you'd hoped, our clinician can assist you in finding a more appropriate dose or suggest other ED treatments.
Sildenafil is the generic form of Viagra, which means it should work just as well. The key difference is that it's typically more affordable. Both have the same active ingredient, so they function in the same way.
Viagra is a branded medicine produced by a single company, and its tablets are known for their distinct blue colour and come in a familiar packaging. On the other hand, Sildenafil is produced by different manufacturers, so the look of Sildenafil tablets can differ depending on who makes them.
Some men choose Viagra instead of the generic Sildenafil. However, both medications are clinically bioequivalent, meaning there's hardly any difference in their effectiveness.
Sildenafil and Tadalafil are both used to treat erectile dysfunction. Although they function in a similar manner, they have different active ingredients, making them distinct from each other. Tadalafil, the generic form of Cialis, can be taken as an on-demand weekend pill, lasting up to 36 hours, or as a low-dose daily pill. However, if you have low blood pressure, a medication with a shorter duration might be more suitable.
Sildenafil is a pill you take as needed, and it works for up to five hours.
Sildenafil is often a bit more affordable than Tadalafil, and for men who prefer not to take medication daily, its five-hour window for sexual activity can be just right. The choice between them depends on your personal sexual habits and preferences.

No, Sildenafil tablets and similar drugs are not suitable or safe for women. There is a medication known as 'female Sildenafil' called Addyi, but it's used for hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD). It is not at all like any approved medication for erectile dysfunction.
Sildenafil isn't right for everyone, and there are a few things you should know before taking it.
Here's all the official information on it. If anything isn't clear, please let our clinician know, and they can discuss it with you.
