Soprobec is an inhaler containing a corticosteroid, designed as a pressurised metered dose inhaler (pMDI), to help prevent asthma symptoms. It's used daily to lower the chance of experiencing an asthma attack.
It is available in four different strengths to treat mild to severe asthma. Typically, you'll begin with the lowest dose that helps your condition, and your prescriber can increase it to maintain control over your asthma. The active ingredient in Soprobec, beclomethasone, works directly on the airways in the lungs and tends to cause fewer side effects than oral corticosteroids.
The Soprobec Inhaler contains beclomethasone dipropionate as its active ingredient. Beclomethasone is a corticosteroid, a type of steroid medication. It can be found in different forms such as an inhaler, cream, pill, or nasal spray. When inhaled, beclomethasone is used for the long-term management of asthma. The cream form is used to treat chronic skin conditions like psoriasis.
Corticosteroids are anti-inflammatory, so they help reduce swelling and irritation in your airway walls, making it easier to breathe if you have conditions like asthma. They work by imitating the hormones your adrenal glands produce, which helps to suppress your immune system. Using a corticosteroid inhaler can help prevent and control asthma symptoms.
Soprobec is a preventer inhaler, meant for daily use as a long-term treatment for asthma. It helps to prevent attacks and lessen symptoms over time. However, if you're having a sudden asthma attack with wheezing and breathlessness, Soprobec won't be effective. In such cases, you'll need a rescue inhaler, also known as a 'reliever' inhaler, which is designed to treat the symptoms of an asthma attack. It's important to always carry one with you.
The dose you begin with will depend on the severity of your asthma. Your prescriber will decide the right dosage of Soprobec for you and how many puffs you should take each day. You might start with a lower dose initially to see how it works for you.
Soprobec comes in four different strengths: 50, 100, 200, and 250 micrograms of beclomethasone dipropionate. Adults usually start with a dose of 200 micrograms taken twice daily. Depending on the strength of your inhaler, this might mean taking two to four puffs. If your total daily dose is 1000 micrograms, it's recommended to use a Volumatic spacer. A spacer helps ensure the medication reaches your lungs effectively, especially with higher doses, so it doesn't just stay in your mouth or throat.
If you find that your current dose isn't managing your symptoms effectively, you might need to increase the amount of your inhaler or the number of puffs you take each day. Be sure to inform your clinician if you believe you need a higher dose.
You might not notice the effects of Soprobec straight away, unlike a 'rescue' inhaler. Some people find their symptoms start to improve within three to seven days. The main benefit of using Soprobec or other beclomethasone inhalers is their high topical activity compared to other corticosteroid inhalers. This means they are absorbed directly by the lungs rather than the rest of your body, which may make them more effective. Taking a daily dose of 200 to 600 mcg of beclomethasone tends to cause fewer side effects than oral corticosteroids, particularly concerning adrenal function. Adrenal function refers to how well your adrenal glands produce hormones. If they aren't working properly, either being overactive or underactive, it can lead to health issues like adrenal insufficiency or Cushing’s syndrome.
In a study examining the safety and effectiveness of beclomethasone inhalers, it was observed that there were noticeable improvements in both morning and evening peak flow (a test to measure how forcefully you can exhale), along with a reduction in the use of reliever inhalers. In a similar study, nearly 50% of patients experienced better asthma control, and the treatment was well-tolerated, even among smokers.
If you accidentally use too much of your inhaler, it's important to get medical help straight away. A doctor might need to check your cortisol levels. Cortisol is a steroid hormone that your body makes naturally. Taking too much inhaled corticosteroid can suppress adrenal function, leading to symptoms like tiredness, muscle weakness, weight and appetite loss, and stomach pain.
Continue using your inhaler as directed and at the right dosage to manage your asthma. Your doctor will let you know if your dosage needs to be adjusted.
Soprobec comes in four different colours to make it easier to tell the doses apart.
Every inhaler provides 200 puffs.
Like all medications, your Soprobec inhaler might cause side effects, though not everyone will experience them. Keep using your inhaler unless your doctor advises you to stop.
You should only stop using your Soprobec inhaler if you think you're having an allergic reaction. This could show up as skin rashes, hives, itching, or swelling of the face, eyes, lips, and throat. If you experience wheezing or difficulty breathing right after using Soprobec, stop using it immediately and use your fast-acting reliever inhaler. Seek urgent medical help. Inform your clinician, who will review your asthma. You might need to switch to a different inhaler.
The most frequent side effects of Soprobec include candidiasis (a fungal infection), thrush in the throat, a hoarse voice, and a sore throat. To help prevent these, you can use a Volumatic spacer device or brush your teeth, or rinse your mouth with water or mouthwash after using your inhaler.
Soprobec and Clenil are quite similar inhalers. Clenil is available in the same four doses as Soprobec and uses the same active ingredient, beclomethasone. Clenil is also a preventer inhaler for mild to severe asthma and can be used with the Volumatic Spacer.
There are other preventer inhalers with the same active ingredient as Soprobec. One option is Easyhaler Beclometasone, which is available as a 200mcg inhalation powder. It might be simpler to use because you just click and inhale the powdered dose when you're ready.
Fostair is a pressurised inhaler that combines beclomethasone, a corticosteroid, and formoterol, a long-acting bronchodilator. These work together to lessen inflammation in the lungs and relax the muscles in your airways, making it easier for you to breathe.
Qvar Easi-Breathe and Qvar Autohaler are available in 50 or 100 mcg doses of beclomethasone. They help prevent asthma symptoms and lower the risk of asthma attacks. The Easi-Breathe is a breath-operated inhaler, making it simple to use—just breathe in to get your dose. The Autohaler works in a similar way but uses a lever to release the dose. You just need to breathe in until you hear a click.
Yes, you'll need a clinician to prescribe Soprobec before you can use it. This is because it contains a corticosteroid and is available in high doses, so the prescriber needs to ensure it's safe and appropriate for you.
Soprobec isn't right for everyone, and there are a few things you should be aware of before using it.
