Tadalafil Description
Tadalafil is the generic form of Cialis.
It’s available as a daily pill (2.5mg, 5mg) or on-demand (10mg, 20mg).
It helps by relaxing the blood vessels in the penis, which boosts blood flow.

What is Tadalafil?

Tadalafil is a prescription medication used to treat erectile dysfunction. It's the generic form of Cialis, meaning it works in the same way, but the packaging and appearance of the tablets differ.

Tadalafil is available in two forms: daily and on-demand. The daily version is available in 2.5mg or 5mg doses, which you can take every day to ensure you're always prepared. The on-demand version comes in 10mg or 20mg doses, with effects lasting up to 36 hours after taking it.

Before deciding, it's a good idea to discuss with your clinician to determine the correct dosage for you.

How does Tadalafil work?

In summary, Tadalafil works by relaxing tight blood vessels, which boosts blood flow to your penis. This makes it easier for the muscle tissue in the penis to fill with blood, helping it to become erect and maintain the erection.

Erections occur due to a chemical process that takes place when you're sexually excited. Your brain sends chemical signals to the blood vessels in the penis, telling them to relax and widen. This lets blood flow into two expandable muscles known as the corpus cavernosum. Once these muscles are filled with blood, you achieve an erection.

With erectile dysfunction, sometimes a physical or mental issue prevents these floodgates from opening, even when you want them to. Tadalafil belongs to a group of medicines called PDE5 inhibitors. PDE5 is an enzyme that can make blood vessels tighten and narrow.

Tadalafil works by restricting the PDE5 enzyme, which helps blood flow into the penis when you're aroused. It's important to note that you need to be sexually stimulated for Tadalafil and other ED medications to be effective.

Tadalafil vs Cialis: What’s the difference?

The main difference is the cost. However, the manufacturer and packaging can differ too. Cialis is the brand-name version of Tadalafil and is consistently produced by the same company. On the other hand, Tadalafil is the generic form of Cialis and is made by various companies and laboratories.

When a company introduces a new medicine to the market, they usually have the exclusive right to manufacture it for a certain period. This was the case with Cialis until 2018, after which other companies were allowed to produce it as a generic version.

Cialis and Tadalafil may appear different, but they contain the same active ingredients, come in the same doses, and have identical side effects, contraindications (reasons why some people might not be able to take them), and uses.

Both medications function in exactly the same manner. However, as Tadalafil is a generic option, it's more cost-effective. This is typically true for most generic medicines.

What if I make a mistake while taking Tadalafil?

It's crucial to stick to the dosage your clinician has prescribed. Taking more tablets than advised isn't needed and can increase the risk of side effects. Symptoms of an overdose may include collapse, seizures, low blood pressure, or trouble breathing.

If Tadalafil isn't working as you'd hoped, your clinician might change your medication or dosage. It's best to let them decide, as trying to do it on your own could be risky for your health.

Another error you might make is taking Tadalafil alongside other medicines that can affect its function. Certain medications, such as nitrates and those for high blood pressure, can heighten the risk of side effects when using Tadalafil, similar to consuming alcohol.

Inside the medication's packaging, you'll find a complete list of medicines that might interact with Tadalafil. Be sure to let your doctor know if you're taking any of these medicines and steer clear of alcohol while using Tadalafil.

Do you need a prescription for Tadalafil?

Yes, Tadalafil is only available with a prescription in the UK. Before you can use it, a doctor or pharmacist will need to ensure it's safe for you by asking some health-related questions. This is important because, although rare, ED medications can sometimes lead to serious and potentially harmful side effects. It's unsafe to take ED drugs that haven't been specifically recommended for you by a healthcare professional.

What should I do if Tadalafil doesn’t work?

There are ways to make Tadalafil more effective. Try to limit how much alcohol you drink, ensure you get plenty of exercise, and avoid taking it right after a large meal. These steps can sometimes improve how well the medication works for you.

Ensure you're feeling in the mood and sexually aroused after taking it. If it doesn't seem to work, you might need a higher dose of Tadalafil or perhaps a different treatment altogether. Speak to your clinician for advice on your treatment plan.

Tadalafil or Sildenafil: which is best?

These are two distinct medications, so which one is better might depend on personal preference. Sildenafil is the generic form of Viagra, while Tadalafil is the generic version of Cialis.

One advantage of Tadalafil is that it comes in both a daily form and a longer-lasting on-demand option. In contrast, Sildenafil only has one version, which starts working in about 30 to 60 minutes and lasts for up to five hours.

Another benefit of Tadalafil (and sildenafil) is that the 5mg dose can sometimes be used to treat an enlarged prostate.

which might make it difficult to pass urine. So, if you're experiencing both ED and BPH, Tadalafil can be helpful in treating both conditions.

Which Tadalafil dosage is right for me?

You have four main options for Tadalafil dosage: 2.5mg, 5mg, 10mg, or 20mg. It might seem like a lot of numbers, so let's simplify it.

If you're after the Tadalafil 'weekend' pill that lasts up to 36 hours, you'll want the 10mg or 20mg dose. You'll usually begin with the 10mg dose. If that doesn't work well enough, you might be advised to try the 20mg dose.

Tadalafil 2.5mg and 5mg tablets are meant for daily use. You usually start with the 5mg dose, but if you experience mild side effects, you can switch to the 2.5mg dose.
