Tetralysal Description
Tetralysal is an antibiotic containing lymecycline, used to treat perioral dermatitis.
It prevents bacteria from spreading and reduces inflammation, which helps to clear perioral dermatitis.
You'll need to take one tablet each day, typically for a minimum of two to three months.

What is Tetralysal?

Tetralysal capsules have lymecycline as their active ingredient, commonly used to treat acne and bacterial infections. This medication is part of the tetracycline antibiotics group. It works by preventing bacteria from producing the proteins they require to live.

Perioral dermatitis is a skin condition where red, inflamed bumps appear around the mouth. If bacteria get trapped in these bumps, they may fill with fluid or pus, which are called pustules. You might also notice scaly patches with this condition. While it can affect anyone, it's most common in young women.

How does Tetralysal work?

Tetracyclines stop bacteria from multiplying. They're broad-spectrum antibiotics, meaning they can help treat various conditions. They are effective against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.

Tetralysal usually takes about 8 to 12 weeks to treat perioral dermatitis. In addition to eliminating bacteria, many antibiotics, such as tetracyclines, also have anti-inflammatory effects that can help clear up perioral dermatitis.

How is Tetralysal different from other treatments for perioral dermatitis?

Lymecycline is one option for treating perioral dermatitis. Other tetracyclines like doxycycline (sometimes known as Vibramycin) and minocycline (available in Minocin and Acnamino) are also commonly used. Additionally, topical antibiotics such as erythromycin and metronidazole can be applied.

As you manage your condition, you may be advised to steer clear of topical creams with steroids, like corticosteroids. This also applies to lotions and ointments. Steroids are believed to worsen perioral dermatitis rashes and can even cause the redness and inflammation around your mouth.

Will Tetralysal cause any side effects?

All medicines can cause side effects, but not everyone will have them. How you react to a medicine can vary from person to person, so there's no way to know for sure which side effects you might experience, if any.

People often experience nausea, diarrhoea, stomach pains, and headaches when taking these capsules. If these symptoms are making you consider stopping the capsules, it's a good idea to talk to a clinician.

If your face, tongue, or throat swells up and you find it hard to breathe, you could be experiencing an allergic reaction. In this situation, go straight to the nearest hospital's A&E for urgent medical help.

If you're pregnant, it's best to steer clear of Tetralysal. Taking these capsules during the second or third trimester can lead to discolouration of your child's teeth.
