Treclin Gel Description
Treclin gel is a skin treatment used for moderate acne.
Apply a small amount directly to the affected areas once daily.
This medication works in two ways, as it combines an antibiotic with a retinoid.

What is Treclin gel?

Treclin gel is used to treat moderate acne and contains two active ingredients. Usually, you'll apply a pea-sized amount to the affected skin areas once a day, in the evening before bedtime. You might start to see results from Treclin in a couple of weeks, but sometimes it can take a month or two to notice an improvement.

Acne vulgaris, often simply called acne, is a common condition and the main reason for spots. It typically occurs because of changes in hormone levels during adolescence and can continue into early adulthood. However, it can also affect people both younger and older.

Your skin's sebaceous glands can sometimes produce too much sebum, which is a natural oil that helps keep your skin moisturised. When there's an excess of sebum, it provides more food for the bacteria on your skin. These bacteria then produce waste that can block and irritate your pores, leading to spots and acne.

How does Treclin gel work?

Treclin contains two active ingredients: tretinoin and clindamycin, which work together to clear your pores and tackle the root cause of acne. Clindamycin is an antibiotic that helps stop the bacteria on your skin from growing and spreading. Tretinoin, on the other hand, helps prevent the build-up of sebum by promoting the shedding of dead skin cells that block your hair follicles. These ingredients are more effective when used together than when used separately.

This 'dual action' makes Treclin especially effective because it tackles two possible causes of blocked pores, helping to combat your acne more efficiently.

What doses of Treclin gel are there?

Treclin gel comes in just one strength: 10 mg (1%) clindamycin and 0.25 mg (0.025%) tretinoin per gram of gel. It's important to use Treclin gel exactly as directed. Don't apply more than advised in an attempt to boost its effectiveness, and continue using it for the full duration recommended, even if your skin starts to look better. If you're not satisfied with the results after twelve weeks of using it as prescribed, have a chat with our clinician. You might need to explore a different treatment option.

How long does it take Treclin gel to work?

The time it takes for Treclin gel to start working can differ for each person. Some may see changes within a week or two, but for most, it takes several weeks to see the best results. It's crucial to continue using Treclin gel for the full duration prescribed, even if your skin looks better. Stopping early might cause the acne to come back, and it could be more resistant to the antibiotic, making it tougher to treat.

The usual treatment lasts about twelve weeks. If you'd like to carry on with acne treatment after this period, please inform our clinician. You'll likely need to switch to a different type of treatment.

What should I do if I make a mistake when using Treclin gel?

Be sure not to use more Treclin gel than your doctor has prescribed, thinking it will work better. It likely won't, and it could irritate and harm the skin on your face.

If you've applied too much Treclin, rinse off the extra with warm, soapy water. Avoid using it again until your symptoms have cleared up if it has caused any.

If you accidentally swallow Treclin, get medical assistance straight away. If you miss applying Treclin one evening, just wait until the next evening to use it. Don't double up on your dose to compensate for the missed application.

How is Treclin gel different from other treatments for acne?

Many acne treatments are available as either an antibiotic or retinoic acid by themselves, but Treclin gel combines both in one product. This can be advantageous, as research has shown that using an antibiotic alongside other treatments can be more effective than using a single treatment on its own.

This can save you from needing to purchase and use two separate treatments to achieve the best results.

Is Treclin gel similar to any other treatments?

Treclin gel is unique because it's the only treatment that combines both tretinoin and clindamycin. This means no other acne treatment works exactly like Treclin gel does for your symptoms. You might come across treatments that use these ingredients separately or mixed with other medicines.

Duac gel includes clindamycin and pairs it with benzoyl peroxide, an antibacterial agent instead of a retinoid. If you're unsure which acne treatment might be best for you, have a chat with us about your health. Our expert team can recommend treatments tailored to your needs.

Do I need a prescription for Treclin gel?

Yes, you do need a prescription for Treclin gel. This is because it's not appropriate for everyone, so our clinician must ensure it's safe and suitable for you before you begin using it.

Since this medication includes an antibiotic, you'll need guidance on how long to use it. This is important because if antibiotics aren't used correctly, the bacteria on your skin could become resistant, making your condition more difficult to manage.
