Treclin Gel Description
Treclin is a gel that helps treat acne and other skin conditions.
It helps combat bacterial infections and stops pores from getting blocked, which in turn reduces inflammation.
Apply a pea-sized amount to the affected area each night for up to 3 months.

What is Treclin and what’s used for?

Treclin is a gel that contains two active ingredients: clindamycin, which is an antibiotic, and tretinoin, a type of retinoid. It's mainly used to treat acne, but sometimes doctors prescribe it for other skin conditions that cause similar breakouts, even if it's not officially approved for those uses. This is known as off-label prescribing, and it's done based on the doctor's experience, strong evidence, and what they believe is best for the patient.

Treclin can sometimes be prescribed for a skin condition called folliculitis, even though it's not its primary use. Folliculitis occurs when hair follicles become inflamed due to infection, chemicals, or injury. Bacterial folliculitis, which is a bacterial infection that leads to red swelling and sometimes pustules, might clear up on its own within a week or two. However, if left untreated, it could develop into boils, which are painful, pus-filled lumps on the skin.

How does Treclin work for folliculitis?

Treclin contains two active ingredients: clindamycin (as phosphate) and tretinoin. Each works well on its own, but they're even more effective when combined. This is partly because tretinoin helps clindamycin absorb better into your skin, enhancing the treatment's effectiveness. Clindamycin phosphate itself is inactive, but your body converts it into clindamycin, an antibiotic that prevents the growth of bacteria responsible for folliculitis by stopping protein production. It also reduces the skin inflammation caused by the infection.

The second ingredient, tretinoin, which is a type of retinoid, helps manage your folliculitis in two ways:

How long does Treclin gel take to work?

Treclin starts working on your skin quite quickly, but it could take a few weeks or even up to three months for your folliculitis to fully clear up. If you notice no improvement or if it worsens after a couple of weeks, it's important to inform your clinician. If you're using our service, just log into your account and send us a message. Our clinical team might recommend different treatments for you.

Are there different forms of Treclin?

Treclin is available solely as a 1% / 0.025% gel. Every gram of the gel includes 10 mg (1%) of clindamycin (in the form of clindamycin phosphate) and 0.25 mg (0.025%) of tretinoin. It is packaged in tubes containing 30g, 60g, or 90g of gel.

What are the alternatives to Treclin gel for folliculitis?

The treatment for folliculitis varies based on its cause, which could be microorganisms such as fungi or bacteria, or it might be due to shaving or skin friction. Your clinician will ask you some questions to help pinpoint the cause and recommend the most suitable treatment. For mild to moderate cases, topical treatments (applied directly to your skin) are available, including:

For more serious cases, you might be advised:

Does Treclin gel bleach?

Treclin gel doesn't bleach the skin. However, it can sometimes cause skin irritation and temporary lightening, although this is a rare side effect and tends to occur more in people with darker skin tones.

How well does Treclin work?

Treclin hasn't been specifically studied for folliculitis yet, but clinical trials have shown it's highly effective for treating acne, which is a similar skin condition. In three studies involving 4,550 people with acne, Treclin Gel was compared to tretinoin, clindamycin phosphate, and the gel base without active ingredients. Treclin delivered significantly better results in reducing different types of lesions and achieving successful treatment. It also worked faster, showing results up to four weeks earlier than the other treatments.

In a study with 2,010 patients who had different skin types and moderate-to-severe acne, researchers compared a combination gel of clindamycin phosphate 1.2% and tretinoin 0.025% (Clin-RA) to a gel with just clindamycin phosphate 1.2% over 12 weeks. Treclin, on the other hand, contains 1% clindamycin and 0.025% tretinoin. Clin-RA showed a higher success rate in treatment (37.8% compared to 31.7%) and a greater reduction in acne lesions than the clindamycin gel alone. It was well-tolerated by all skin types, with no issues of skin lightening or darkening reported.
