Utovlan is a hormonal tablet that can postpone your period or help with endometriosis, PMS, and heavy periods.
Helps stop the lining of your womb from thickening, which can reduce bleeding and pain during your periods.
For heavy periods, you'll usually take 15 mg, which is three tablets, each day for 10 days.

What is Utovlan?

Utovlan is a tablet that falls under a group of medicines known as progestogens, which are similar to the natural hormone progesterone. The progestogen in Utovlan is norethisterone. It's a tablet you take for a short time each month, and you'll take it at various times in your cycle, depending on its purpose for you.

Utovlan has several uses. It's helpful for treating heavy or painful periods, PMT, and endometriosis. Additionally, it can be used to delay periods.

How does Utovlan work?

The amount of progesterone in your body fluctuates throughout your menstrual cycle. It rises as the lining of the womb thickens in preparation for a fertilised egg. If pregnancy doesn't occur, this thickened lining is shed (your period begins), and progesterone levels drop once more.

The norethisterone in Utovlan acts like natural progesterone, stopping its levels in your body from dropping. You can use Utovlan at various times during your period to imitate the different phases of your cycle.

If you'd like to use Utovlan to delay your period, you'll start taking it towards the end of your cycle. It works by making your womb lining think you're pregnant, even though you're not. This stops the womb lining from shedding, so you won't get your period.

Utovlan is also prescribed for treating endometriosis. It works by preventing the lining of the womb (endometrium) from thickening and shedding. When used regularly, Utovlan will thin the lining and eventually stop your periods.

Medical researchers have found that norethisterone is also an effective treatment for heavy periods.

Are there different Utovlan doses?

Utovlan is available in a 5mg dose. Depending on how severe your symptoms are or why you're taking it, your doctor might advise you to take more than one tablet a day.

If you notice that the prescribed dose isn't effective, feel free to ask our clinician for guidance. They might suggest increasing your dose or recommend other treatments you could consider.

Does Utovlan work?

Utovlan contains active ingredients that are very effective at postponing your period. Studies indicate that taking one tablet three times daily successfully delays periods in over 90% of women. Clinical trials have also shown that norethisterone is more effective at delaying periods than the combined contraceptive pill. Norethisterone can help lessen period pain by thinning the womb lining and stopping it from shedding. While researchers aren't completely certain why norethisterone helps many women with PMT symptoms, it's thought that it might help by keeping hormone levels steady in the body.

What to do if you miss a tablet

If you forget to take your Utovlan tablet, take it as soon as you remember. Then continue with your usual schedule. Do not take two tablets at once, as this can raise the chance of side effects.
