Utovlan can postpone your period for as long as 17 days.
Assists in managing heavy or irregular periods and premenstrual syndrome.
The amount of tablets you take each day will depend on the condition you're treating.

What is Utovlan?

Utovlan is a tablet that falls under a group of medicines known as progestogens, which are similar to the natural hormone progesterone. The progestogen in Utovlan is called norethisterone. You take this pill for a short time each month, and the timing will vary based on what you need it for.

Utovlan has several uses. It can help with heavy or painful periods, PMT, and endometriosis. Additionally, it can be used to delay periods.

How does Utovlan work?

The amount of progesterone in your body fluctuates throughout your menstrual cycle. It rises as the lining of the womb thickens in preparation for a fertilised egg. If pregnancy doesn't occur, this thickened lining is shed from your body, marking the start of your period, and progesterone levels drop once more.

The norethisterone in Utovlan acts like natural progesterone, stopping its levels in your body from dropping. You can use Utovlan at various times in your menstrual cycle to replicate its different stages.

If you'd like to use Utovlan to delay your period, you'll start taking it towards the end of your cycle. This makes your womb lining behave as if you're pregnant, even though you're not. As a result, it stops the womb lining from shedding, preventing your period from starting.

Utovlan is also used to manage endometriosis. It works by preventing the womb lining, or endometrium, from thickening and shedding. With regular use, Utovlan will thin the lining and eventually stop your periods.

Medical researchers have found that norethisterone is also an effective treatment for heavy periods.

Are there different Utovlan doses?

Utovlan is available in a 5mg dosage. Your doctor might advise you to take more than one tablet a day, depending on how severe your symptoms are or why you're using it.

If the prescribed dose isn't effective, feel free to ask our clinician for guidance. You might need a higher dose, or they could suggest other treatments for you to consider.

Does Utovlan work?

The active ingredients in Utovlan are very effective at postponing your period. A clinical trial showed that norethisterone is more effective at delaying periods than the combined contraceptive pill.

Norethisterone eases period pain by thinning the womb lining and stopping it from shedding.

Researchers aren't completely certain why norethisterone alleviates PMT symptoms for many women, but it's thought that it might help by keeping hormone levels stable in the body.

What to do if you miss a tablet

If you miss a dose of Utovlan, take it as soon as you remember. Then continue with your usual schedule. Avoid taking two tablets at once, as this could raise the chance of side effects.
