Valtrex Description
Valtrex is a prescription tablet used to treat cold sores.
It helps clear your skin by preventing the herpes virus from multiplying.
You might notice an improvement in symptoms within five days.

What is Valtrex?

Valtrex tablets are a prescribed medicine used to alleviate herpes symptoms. They effectively treat cold sores and herpes sores on the skin, leaving your skin clear and relieving the pain, itching, and discomfort associated with herpes outbreaks. Additionally, they can help prevent the spread of herpes to other areas of your body.

It's also occasionally used to lower the chances of transmitting herpes to sexual partners, though it's not guaranteed to be completely effective. If you'd like more information on this, have a chat with our clinician.

How does Valtrex work?

Valtrex contains the active ingredient valaciclovir. It works by preventing the herpes virus from multiplying, which helps to clear up outbreaks, including cold sores or lesions, and eases any soreness or itching.

Taking Valtrex at the first signs of symptoms can help reduce the severity of a herpes outbreak and prevent it from spreading to other areas of the body.

What doses of Valtrex are there?

Valtrex is available as a tablet. We provide a 500mg tablet of Valtrex for treating Herpes. If this treatment isn't effective for you, it's a good idea to talk to your clinician about other treatment options, as there isn't a different dose available.

How long does it take Valtrex to work?

The duration of Valtrex treatment can differ based on the person and how severe your herpes infection and outbreak are. Generally, you should notice improvement within five days of starting Valtrex. If your symptoms continue, please get in touch with our clinician for further advice and other treatment options.

What should I do if I make a mistake when taking Valtrex?

Make sure to read the instructions that come with your Valtrex treatment thoroughly before using it. This will help you avoid any mistakes.

1
If you miss a dose of your Valtrex, take it as soon as you remember, then carry on with your usual schedule.
2
If you notice any side effects or have concerns about your treatment, please talk to our clinician for more guidance.

How is Valtrex different to other treatments for herpes?

Valtrex contains a different antiviral medication compared to treatments like aciclovir, but it functions in much the same way. It helps prevent the virus from multiplying and spreading to nearby healthy cells. This can speed up the healing of herpes sores and ease any pain, itching, or discomfort they cause.

Valtrex is only available in tablet form. It doesn't come as a cream or an oral suspension. If you have trouble taking tablets, it's best to discuss other treatment options with our clinician. Log into your account and send them a message.

Is Valtrex similar to any other treatments?

You can get a generic version of Valtrex called valaciclovir. It has the same active ingredient and works just like Valtrex, but it's produced by a different company and might be a bit cheaper. Deciding between a branded or generic treatment is entirely up to you.

Which dose of Valtrex should I use?

There are two strengths available, 250mg and 500mg. If the initial dose prescribed by our clinicians isn't effective, please inform us so we can discuss it further.

How effective is Valtrex?

Valtrex, along with its generic version valaciclovir, can reduce the period during which the herpes virus is contagious. It has also been shown to significantly speed up the healing process of herpes lesions, which can help ease discomfort and improve the look of the lesion or cold sore.

Taking Valtrex daily can also help reduce the chance of passing herpes to sexual partners. It can lower the risk of a partner developing symptomatic genital herpes by up to 77%.

However, it's important to always use condoms to lower the risk of transmission. If you'd like more information on this, feel free to have a chat with our clinician.

Valtrex tablets won't permanently cure herpes since it's a virus that remains in the body. However, they can help lessen future outbreaks and reduce the severity of the virus, which can enhance your comfort, confidence, and overall quality of life.

Do I need a prescription for Valtrex?

You'll need a prescription to get Valtrex tablets, as they aren't available over the counter. A clinician will need to review your medical history and situation to ensure that Valtrex is safe and appropriate for you.

Our healthcare professionals are here to help you select the right medication for your herpes, whether you're dealing with cold sores or genital herpes.
