Xigduo Description
Xigduo is a diabetes medication that combines dapagliflozin and metformin for dual action.
Dapagliflozin prevents the kidneys from absorbing glucose, while metformin helps lower blood sugar levels.
Xigduo is usually taken twice daily with meals.

What are Xigduo tablets?

Xigduo tablets are a combination medication that helps lower blood sugar levels. They're intended for individuals with type 2 diabetes to assist in managing blood glucose.

In addition to helping manage your blood sugar levels, Xigduo can also aid in weight loss and lower the risk of future complications.

How do Xigduo tablets work?

Xigduo tablets contain two active ingredients: dapagliflozin and metformin. Dapagliflozin is an SGLT2 inhibitor, which means it prevents a protein called SGLT2 from functioning as it normally would. This action reduces the kidneys' absorption of glucose, helping to lower blood sugar levels.

Metformin belongs to a group of medicines known as biguanides. It helps reduce blood sugar by lowering its production in the body and reducing the amount of glucose you absorb from your food. These actions work effectively to bring down blood sugar levels, assisting you in managing your diabetes treatment.

What doses of Xigduo are there?

Xigduo tablets come in two different sizes. One contains 5mg of dapagliflozin propanediol with 850mg of metformin, while the larger tablet has 5mg of dapagliflozin propanediol with 1000mg of metformin. The right tablet for you will depend on your symptoms.

Typically, the standard dose is one tablet taken twice daily. However, the specific dose you need will depend on your symptoms. If the initial dose doesn't effectively manage your diabetes, please consult your clinician about adjusting it, or feel free to message us.

How long does it take Xigduo tablets to work?

Xigduo's complete effects might take some time to become noticeable. Dapagliflozin begins to affect your glucose levels within a few hours of taking it, whereas metformin may need a few days to reduce your blood sugar.

While Xigduo starts working fairly quickly, you might not notice the full benefits straight away. When you order from us, we'll follow up with you during your treatment to see how Xigduo is affecting you.

What should I do if I make a mistake while taking Xigduo?

Taking too much Xigduo can lead to serious side effects, so seek medical help immediately. If you miss your usual dose of Xigduo, simply take it as soon as you remember.

If it's almost time for your next dose, just skip the one you missed and continue taking it as usual. Never take two doses at once to make up for a forgotten tablet. Speak to your clinician before stopping Xigduo.

Are Xigduo tablets similar to any other treatment?

Dapagliflozin and metformin can each be used on their own to treat diabetes. You can choose between generic or branded versions of these medications, depending on your preference.

There are also other combination treatments that include either dapagliflozin or metformin. Canagliflozin, which works in much the same way as dapagliflozin, is available with metformin in a tablet called Vokanamet.

How effective are Xigduo tablets?

The active ingredients in Xigduo are effective at lowering blood sugar on their own, so when combined, they work even better.

A study looked at how well dapagliflozin works when combined with metformin, comparing it to various other treatments such as DPP-4 inhibitors, TZDs, and sulphonylureas. When used alongside metformin, dapagliflozin was just as effective at managing blood sugar levels as these other treatments. It either matched or outperformed them in reducing blood sugar and was more effective for weight loss.

Xigduo can assist in managing your blood sugar levels and make it simpler to maintain your overall health.

To make Xigduo work even better, it's helpful to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Managing your type 2 diabetes includes losing weight and having regular health check-ups. Staying active with regular exercise will also support your health and help manage your diabetes.

Can you drink alcohol while taking Xigduo?

While you're taking Xigduo tablets, it's best to limit your alcohol intake. Drinking alcohol with Xigduo can increase your risk of ketoacidosis, which is a serious condition. It may also reduce the effectiveness of your medication.

Drinking alcohol can complicate managing your diabetes, as excessive consumption impacts your overall health. It can also raise your risk of hypoglycaemia. It's important not to drink too much at once or too frequently.

Do I need a prescription for Xigduo tablets?

Yes, you can only obtain Xigduo tablets with a prescription. These tablets are specifically intended for individuals with type 2 diabetes. Your diabetes treatment will also be tailored to your personal health requirements.

When you discuss your health with us, we can assist you in finding the appropriate treatment plan. If Xigduo is suitable for you, our clinicians can provide a prescription and arrange for your medication to be delivered directly to your home.

Important Information

Xigduo tablets aren't right for everyone, and there are a few things you should know when using them.

Recent studies suggest that metformin, a component of Xigduo, might impact sperm quality. Men who are trying to father a child should talk to their diabetes doctor or nurse to see if Xigduo is suitable for them.

Here's all the official information on it. If you find anything unclear, please let our clinician know, and they can discuss it with you.
